Title: Game Thread: Herd vs. Ohio University
Post by: jdonaccbus on December 14, 2024, 02:22:29 PM
Pivotal game for this team. I gotta get my mind on something else but this football fiasco. Start the thread early.

Hopefully Martin is more healthy than he has been the last couple of games. He is the true leader of this team. He is our best player. Hopefully he can go today and we can rest if needed against WV Wesleyan.

Ohio is 4-5 entering today's contest. They have won three of their last four. They beat Morehead State at home last Saturday. They have already lost to two Sun Belt schools.

Ohio has balanced scoring with five guys averaging double figures. AJ Clayton leads the Bobcats in scoring, rebounding and block shots. The 6'8"/245 pound senior averages 16.1 ppg and 6.8 rpg.

Both teams are desperate for a win heading into the break.

It?s going to be another loss.  I?m very disappointed on how Smith and company has hired our coaches for football and basketball.  So frustrating how we bush league decisions.  I?m beginning to realize that there?s a lot more to life than sports in Huntington.

Very important to get a win.  Hopefully we are full strength.

I like how we are going inside hard with Martin and OAK. Martin is playing with an extra gear today.

I think we win by 15-20 points if this type of effort continues.

Yea pound the ball inside

Adapt to the players we have and maximize that regardless of system

Go Herd!

18-10 Herd. I like everything that I am seeing. We are really intense today. Best energy to start a game this season Speer is going to be good for us this season. Once he gets a step, he is hard to stop.

Only thing I haven't liked.....we went three possessions in the game with Mark Martin not calling one bit of the action....game going on and he telling us his opinion of how D2 players moving up to D1 is such a great thing, commenting on other silly things. Just call the action.

yep, i like the better energy, movement (feet and ball) and attacking the rim

Offensively we got away from what got us going early......using the dribble to set up the pass.

We are now over-dribbling and dribbling out of the flow of the offense. Speer got the call off the pass, squared to the post and fed Martin for two. More of that and less arc dribbling.

Martin went after the Ohio big that has two fouls, but we haven't done enough of that since he has been in the game.

I don't think it was good of Corny taking both OAK and Martin out at the same time for a 3-minute stretch. We had no post threat at that point. That is when Ohio cut the lead down.

Seems he doesn't understand what the role of the PBP announcer is. He struggles to see that his role on FB radio is different than BB tv.

Dawson playing well this half

Nice to see we haven't fouled that much and shot the ball well 53% from the field and 50% from from the three

Great play by Dawson. Gets the quick steal and nails a 3-fading away in the final seconds.

Kid can really shoot that 3 in transition. And he has a nice build different from our guys of the past 10 years. He has a strong upper body with good lateral movement on defense. He is tough for 2's and 3's to go up against. I am really liking how he is playing.

Martin should be fresh for the second half. Hopefully he comes out strong like he did to start the game.

A few mistakes especially at one point with the substitutions, but a really good half on both ends of the floor.

Great start to the second half. Good coming out of the half, feed Martin, kick out to the hot shooter for a three. Great strategy.

48-33 Herd. Put the foot on the pedal.

Corny really showed some fire there. He knows this is a key game that you don't want to lose at home. You can't let the opposing coach be constantly out of the box and allowed to have several long conversations with refs during dead balls. I would rather Corny get after some people then have the statue on the sideline.

Martin and OAK out. May need to play one in and one out for the next four to five minutes. Can't let Ohio cut the lead like they did in the first half.

A-f'n-Men.

Along with all the references to the players' past HS & college teams, and god forbid if a player has had a coach with local or regional connections, and then there's his diction...formerrrrrrChapmanville starrrrr.
It's an embarrassing sound in front of any opponent's fans. Coming in forrrrr the Herrrrrd...

Marshall wins 79-70. We needed that.

Easy win on Monday. Then a very winnable road game vs. Southern Miss.

much better out of the gate.  if it was in part, not starting Nutter, then so be it.  good job keeping a 10 pt lead (until the last minute).  Ohio is not bad but they've now lost to 3 SBC teams so whatever that might mean (JMU & TX St).

He is brutal to listen to.  I?ve heard better high school announcers.  Just goes on an on about irrelevant garbage, and is so monotone it?s like a sleeping pill.

With the exception of a three minute span, this is the best we have looked all season. We came out with intensity and pretty much kept it up. I want to know where all the Awson washers have gone to. Many were trashing him after the first few games. He is playing very good right now.

Best they have looked all year. Need to keep fine tuning and getting more consistancy out of Obinna. At least he isn't jacking up 8 3s a game like he did in previous years. Need for Speer to keep getting better also as the season goes. This league is very winnable and just terrible this year. Lamar beat Louisiana by 30 tonight. High point beat App State. The scores are embarrassing every night out from this league. No reason at all we shouldn't win this league. Just keep getting better.

The Sun Belt isn't very good at all which is why we should be more devoted as an athletic program to having a championship men's basketball program.

Corny needs a chance. But he needs another quality recruiter/connected assistant coach on the bench. Fulford will help us and Adam Williams works hard on the high school circuit. White and Moore weren't horrible gets by him. We have another assistant that I can't name his last recruit.

Corny stated on his post-game that we didn't shoot as many threes and he thinks as a coaching staff that they need to really look at that and start developing more mid-range game. I hear some say they miss listening to Dan. I don't. I think Corny handles himself well and is candid and on point on questions that are asked.

Corny does far more coaching on the sideline during games. He will challenge players. He communicates more to the players throughout the game. To me, he has some refreshing qualities.

I hope we can get him some support thru NIL. He is going to need it after this season. But we, as a school, should be thinking more about building a championship program. He needs to move some players off the bench to other schools. I actually wish more would have left last season and we could have worked the portal/JUCO for two more players. Speer, Mingo, the one Gibbs and Dawson have been good finds for this season. I think we really needed one more post/forward type player from the portal for this year's team.

Devoting to going to the NCAA tournament has great benefits. We seem to always invest in football and seem in a lot of seasons to end up in some 6-6/7-5 bowl game that no one watches. I think would be easier for us to contend yearly for a basketball title in this league in my opinion. I especially think that is true after watching all this helter-skelter that is going on right now with football.

I'm encouraged by yesterday, as Ohio has been a cut above us in the past 10-20 years, and we beat them handily.

Hopefully the reason Speer hasn't been starting is due to recovery from injury, because we are a MUCH better team with him in the lineup and Mingo at PG.

Moore and White need more minutes over Nutter, as he tries hard but he isn't a DI player (should only get garbage time minutes)

Fricks has to step his game up or Corny needs to bring Harding along as quickly as possible to spell Obinna and Nate

Not trying to take away from our win because we played our best game this year. But this is probably the weakest OU team I've seen in a long time. But the good news is we won't face anyone better than them the rest of the season outside of maybe Elon and Arkansas St. the SB is really that bad.

I like Nutter's play. The one negative, at least to me, is that he won't shoot when he is wide open. I would like to see the two freshmen get more playing time.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here.

Southern Miss isn't very good. But it is on the road and we haven't been knocking it out of the park on the road. Hopefully a healthy Martin is a go and we get the win.

I am on to basketball. Still wondering why we didn't hire a 4th assistant to replace Caldwell. I thought the money would be available since we knocked the head coaching pay down. Another recruiter on the sideline.....another guy with some connections to AAU programs, quality private academies & schools.....it would seem fair to Corny. I guess a lot of others disagree, including leadership.
