HUNTINGTON -- Kirby Watson might be coming to Marshall University, after all.
When the MU football recruit was arrested on two counts of drug possession on Feb. 21 in his home town of Daytona, Beach, Fla., it appeared unlikely the former Mainland High School star running back ever would join the Thundering Herd football program.
All that inexplicably changed, however, when the felony possession of cocaine charge and the misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge surprisingly were dropped by the State Attorney's Office in Florida last week.
After he was arrested and handcuffed, the police report said that Watson told officers who were searching the car, "You aren't going to find any weed in there. I smoked it all."
According to the police report, several small pieces of marijuana and suspected crack cocaine were found on Watson's seat and floorboard. The report also stated that tests performed at the scene detected a reaction for the presence of marijuana and cocaine.
But State Attorney's Office spokesperson Linda ****** told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that the charges were dismissed because only a trace amount of the drugs were found.
Watson, a 5-foot-6, 200-pound running back, had been one of the media favorites in Marshall's 2006 recruiting class due to his unique size. He was named second-team All-State at linebacker as a junior.
Then, last season Watson was first-team All-Area after rushing for 403 yards and scoring six touchdowns.
He is expected to be an academic non-qualifier.
