Listed currently as second on the depth chart as a safety, the 5-10, 180-pound Johnson saw extensive action at safety as a redshirt freshman for the Thundering Herd last season. Johnson had 29 tackles, the second most by freshman. In a 30-23 win against Western Kentucky in November, he returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown and had seven tackles. The Herd (8-5 last season) got their first win over Western Kentucky since that school joined Conference USA in 2014.
