  • CBSsports.com veteran college football analyst Jerry Palm has released his pre season Bowl Projections for 2018-19.

First, for the New Year Six G5 slot, Palm pick Boise, saying that they have the best chance for an undefeated or one loss season among the AAC teams and other G5 programs.  He has the Broncos facing off with Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl.

For CUSA teams, the opening Bowl date, December 15th finds North Texas facing San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl, and LA Tech versus UL-Monroe in the New Orleans Bowl.

On December 18, its CUSA's FAU facing Memphis in the Boca Raton Bowl, according to Palm

On December 20, its UAB against the AAC's South Florida in Tampa's Gasparilla Bowl.

On December 21, MTSU gets the nod for the Bahamas Bowl versus the MAC's NIU.

On December 22, MARSHALL'S Thundering Herd takes on the Mountain West's Wyoming Cowboys in the Hawaii Bowl!!

On December 26, the last CUSA team, Southern Miss. faces off with Colorado State in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Some other interesting picks by Palm include Ohio U. facing Arkansas State in the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile and on December 28, WVU faces Southern California in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

Among the predicted match ups, I would rather see the Herd face one of the two AAC teams, either in Tampa or Boca Raton.  I believe Doc Holiday, and probably Mike Hamrick, would prefer this also.

    Any thoughts?????????  Fire Away!!!!!

  • I've seen articles from the Houston, UCF, and Boise camps openly talking about their goal is the NY6 bowl like we talk about competing for conference championships.  I wish the NY6 were our openly stated goal - our championship if you will like these schools we used to compete with.

  • Or, perhaps, our main football goal these days is to have about half of our latest recruiting class actually show up and be eligible to play when fall practice starts in August!!!

  • Access bowl is all that matters to me. What does going to Florida in a low level bowl every year do? It’s like only expecting and hoping for a CBIor cit bid in basketball. If that is all basketball was shooting for and expected, I’m not interested. We need to start expecting more from the football program. National stage and become the G5 king once again.

  • The Texas AM game is that day. I would be way more interested in that game than the bowl. The AM game would mean a lot more.

Have you ever been to a bowl game in Florida where you mix with Marshall fans and enjoy something of a vacation at the same time? I find many people critical of the bowl games have never experienced attending one. Any time we can spread the Marshall brand to different parts of the country certainly means something to me. Did you ever watch the Young Thundering Herd or go to the fountain ceremony, our football program is so much more than the Access Bowl.

Those bowl games don't create any buzz outside of the Marshall fanbase. Marshall needs to get enrollment upwards of 20k. The access bowl would create excitement like what the Tournament did last year.

  • You are mistaken about Marshall football, as a result of We Are Marshall our football program has a footprint across America, people other than Marshall fans do pay attention to our program. I live at Wrightsville Beach in NC and people from all over the east visit, I wear my Marshall gear and they talk football not basketball.

  • I agree. We need to demand that our football program is a premiere G5 program. We have a solid fan base, good market, history, facilities, etc. We spend to much money on football to be a mediocre G5 program. This isn't a knock on anyone in our conference or any of that. Just stinks when we were Boise before Boise. We dropped the ball but its time for us to step up imo. Esp in this new CUSA.

I vacation in Oak Island, NC and the people I spoke to were talking about the great win in San Diego. I went to Marshall from 96-01. All we did was win but the football ship has sailed.

My concern about our Conference of Misfit Toys is in the eyes of selection committee and in public perception that a one loss Boise, UH or UCF will be judged "more deserving" than an undefeated champ of our conference.

True.  Met people from Chicago, Utah and Melbourne, Australia last week while vacationing in Chicago, and all commented on seeing the movie and what an inspirational story it was.

  • I say we sneak out of Williams-Brice on a last-minute Daninelle Derricott pick and Billy Maleshevich FG ( substitute Chris "Toast" Jackson and J. Rohrwasser if you like ), then the following week  edge NCSU by as much as the ACC game refs will let us ... leaving Huntington abuzz with talk of an Access Bowl.

Almost typed "Bryce" by mistake .. too much p0rn lately  :'(

  • Of course I realize this is just talking about something to hear yourself speak at this point of the year, but no way Marshall ever goes to the Hawaii bowl. We draw too many fans for a bowl that is drivable. The one is considered a throwaway so far as attendance.

I agree! A lot of Herd fans have become complacent having mediocre years. To many have settled for the 8-4, 7-5, ( Florida vacation, ice cream bowl games that no one else cares about . Boise State and UCF, continues to shoot for the stars. They're not settling for less!

Agree, I doubt Hamrick would ever agree to that bowl.

If the league says we go, then we have no choice. Nassau is one that most don't want to go to. Teams will take turns going there if nobody wants to go. 2 years ago it was easy because MTSU wanted to go there. I think I read that the president is from Bahamas.
Generally speaking an eastern team will go to Nassau while a western team will go to Hawaii'

Puma, believe the closest thing would be the Heart of Dallas Bowl, or another one in Texas, in which the CUSA has a tie in, I believe, if both or one of the Power Leagues, Big 12, Big 10, etc., can't fill their slot.  Would give CUSA team a chance to play, say, against a Big 10 number 6 or 7 or a similar Big 12 foe.  Was the case a few seasons back when the Herd could have played Illinois down in D town but instead played a good Northern Illinois in the Boca Bowl in FL.

There are no set #2 AAC etc any more. It;s just where CUSA and ESPN think is the best fit.
I'm hoping to go back to Boca vs a MAC team. Great venue and super area to vacation a few days

No disrespect intended, but this makes me sick. Conference titles and a worthless bowl in boca? That's not going to do much for recruiting. We should at least get a shot at a p5 occasionally in the HoD bowl, while it still exists. I used to look forward to bowl season, and anymore, its an embarrassment.
