  • within CUSA (even after the 5k fans John ran off). We Are...Marshall. And I don't think we need to make excuses for everything...we have A LOT going for us, and we need to start expecting/demanding that we win the conference almost every year like the Steelers...because that is who we truly are.

I'm always taken back by how the Facebook games are filled with Marshall fans chiming in...

    Go Herd...from Hawaii.
    Go Herd...from Washington.
    Go Herd...from Oklahoma.

We have fans all over the country/world unlike our conference mates. And it seems like we sometimes have more fans at our away games than the home team. We have History. We have a movie that advertises our university multiple times yearly (check out the thousands of comments on twitter from around the world every time the movie plays on cable TV), and we have a pretty rabid fan base STILL.

All it will take is having people here that know how to capitalize on our name/brand...and who demand excellence...for us to be on UCF's level...and I know...yada...yada..yada...they have this and that...but we also have "this and that" that they don't have. We need to build on our strengths.

In football and basketball we need to and CAN be a top G5 year in and year out. Obtain and then retain that status for a decade or so...and a larger conference will come calling...and please spare me all the negative reasons of why it can't happen...that mentality is such a cancer and is the exact cancer that has held this RIVER City back. I say RIVER because we are a freak'n RIVER city, and it is amazing we haven't capitalized on it. I truly hope that when the old money of Huntington dies off, their kids/grandkids are rebellious enough to think totally opposite of them and see this city and university through to it's fullest potential instead of stifling it at every turn.  This city seems to have a serious lack of dreamers and visionaries. Every great thing starts with a dream. Every great campaign starts with a vision. We just have to find leaders for the university and Huntington that have great aspirations.

  • Honest question, no pain or jabs intended, Champ; do you have any ties to the activities or development groups in Cabell County or Huntington?  I'm asking because the River is a major part of the development that has taken place over the last decade, and you imply that it has not been considered.  Seriously, just asking, not slamming.

    No, I don't.

At the moment it's almost 2019 and we still have a flood wall blocking the river, first major issue. There is also little at Riverfront Park other than a painfully small skate park, park, and a million dollar boat enclosure(?).

I know there are plans...a 100 million worth of plans... to develop the riverfront...but as of now that hasn't happened yet. That should have happened 50-75 years ago or more. There should be hotels, a boardwalk, shops, etc on the river right now. It should be our crown jewel. Instead it is something we hide with the flood wall...monumental fail.

For the sake of not insulting REAL "development", there is NO development on the river at the moment in Huntington. That's what I'm talking about.

Think the plans are fantastic, but to my eyes ground has not even been broken yet on those plans. With real leaders we could have and should have been a Cincinnati.

Huntington's the largest inland port in the US. Has been a Jeopardy question.

  • Champ, sorry to inform you but Huntington and MU missed their opening some 20-30 years ago.  All you have to do is look at the history for the area for the past 50 years.  Every major category ( just look at the categories for population and economy ) has declined, a lot.  Add in the state factor and the opportunities become even further harder to change.  Also, if you think the old money will come back dream again. Most of that money has already been donated or used.  Lastly, you need to look at the environment for sports from the younger generation.  Times are a changing rather quickly and the new generation does not have that passion of those of yesterday.

Call me a naysayer or whatever but the information I posted above is based on facts, not wishful thinking.  As they say, give us facts or give us nothing.

  • You're looking, apparently, for the entertainment factor. Economically, the river is spurring activity.  Inland transfer station for transportation, remains a huge transport for coal, primary selling point (or one of the top ones) for economic development in the area.

What little flat land we have for development (not entertainment) is created by the river, and those who are accountable for creating opportunities use it every day.

Many small to mid size manufacturers have chosen the region ONLY because of the development of "river" capabilities.

  • If Huntington didn’t have a flood wall then what would happen if they got another big flood?

    I feel that there’s a good reason it’s there.

How do you know they are not Alumni? I did a discourse on the demographics of MU, look  it up.

How's the Technology Park coming along? Kinetic Park was it? Still sporting a Hi-Tech cheer / dance studio?

That should answer all your questions... if not think Heroin(e)

Hey Johns, would you mind supplying me the link to your discourse? I'd be interested in reading it. Thank you.

Most of Huntington, including Marshall, is situated on a floodplain. The flood wall has been used countless times since it has been built to protect property from flooding. You can google the 1937 flood to see pictures of the Marshall campus and all of downtown under water.
