  • Yep the mighty CUSA goes down with egg all over its face.  This was, I believe, Longwood's first post season tourney game at home.  Bitch slapped USM, who had destroyed us by 50.  Unless the Herd goes on to win the CIT and/or ODU wins a game or two in the Dance, it will just confirm what about everyone outside CUSA knows:  the League is a JOKE in basketball!!  Please no comments on how balanced and competitive the League was this season!!  Hopefully Doc Sadler wore a clean sweatshirt this evening to ameliorate the embarrassment.

In addition, Brown beat UAB and Harvard won in the NIT at Georgetown.  Guess the Ivy League is a lot better in basketball than we thought; arguably a better league than CUSA!  Who knew???

Other scores of note tonight:  Neers beat GCU; Xavier knocked off Toledo at home; Green Bay beat ETSU AT Johnson City in somewhat of a surprise; and in the NIT, Norfolk State stunned Alabama, yep, THE TIDE, in ot in Tuscaloosa by 1 point!!!!  Oh, and before anymore complaints about the size of the crowd for the Herd's CIT game against IUPUI, the TIDE game drew a "mighty throng" of 2000 tonight!!!

  • Long wood hit only 1 more 3 than we did against USM but somehow smoked them.  Looks like rebounding kind of matters.  LW won the rebounding battle handily.  More confirmation that we must do something to turn that stat around next year.   It’s been killing us for a longtime.

  • To finish 6th seed in such a weak basketball conference is a disgrace. The entire conference is embarrassing. A one team in the NCAA only because it is automatic....and not even a smell in the NIT. I wonder why the NCAA allows below 500 basketball teams to play in the insignificant CBI and CIT while requiring 500+ to play in a bowl? What a joke.

Then don't watch. Some of us enjoy watching the team we love play whether football, basketball, volleyball etc.

  • The truth hurts, doesn't it meister? Stop being so pious. You are so much into basketball and DD that you have lost your perspective of MU sports. If DD said he loves losing, you would support that......and please don't tell me what to watch. Unlike you, I'm not tied to one program. Get yourself another cup of coffee at Tudors and go watch another BB practice. You dare not miss one!

2XBison, I don't let people like you upset me....I consider the source and you, my friend, do not represent a good one.

    Go Thundering Herd.

I appreciate your basketball insight on many topics, but you can be upset and critical at the team and still be a huge fan. Also, not good to tell a fan to not watch just because he said they underperformed (which they did!)

I agree.  Everything and everyone can be subjected to constructive criticism.  It is how we all get better.

I have said it before and will say it again...if teams like Buffalo, Wofford, Murray State can have success then Marshall can.  The OVC had 2 teams in the tournament...2.  Until our team and conference mates put a priority on winning OOC games we will never be more than a 1 bid league and if our goal is only to get a higher seed then why are we even making any effort in any game but getting to the CUSA tournament and hoping to get hot.

It seems like Marshall just can't catch a break. People can say one guy shouldn't make that much difference. But Peneva made all the difference. His skill set totally changed our team. He was the olnly Big we had that could put it on the floor and blow by his man to the hole. It also let Jannson play his more natural position the 4. It gave Jon and others more pick and roll options. He was a very good defender inside and shot blocker. He could drain the 3. It totally changed our team when he unexpectedly left early. We were just not the same team moving the ball and having the options we did.

  • Bust I agree with you on that. At the mid major level, it’s very rare to put a team together with the parts which DD did. With AP this year we are dancing with Reg season championship and top 25 ranking ala Buffalo. Without, we were never able to replace at the 5 position. I’m not even saying that he was the greatest player to ever live. Just that combined together, we had an excellent team. Mid  majors can’t just reload and especially with bigs.  I’ve read all the theories, but that’s the reality. It was apparent to everyone, and I think AP even came to realize, that his decision was a mistake.

If you are watching the tournament most  of the mid majors have more than one big man. The reality is we don't work recruiting  hard enough to be successful doing it. Try getting out of the telephone area code territory for a change, recruiting is often simply a combination of time and energy.

The problem is we shouldn’t have been in the position to have only one big man.  We have a certain system however it can and should be modified some. We have lost on our lack of bigs. We all know our recruiting of the 5 has been lacking.  Relying on Penava and a 350 lb guy for this year hurt.  Now I am all for IB getting the chance and getting in shape. I think he can play when he gets to about 280.  We just shouldn’t have had our hopes set on just Penava.  It isn’t like our coaching staff is in year 2.

Now I love Coach D’Antoni.  I am glad he is here. I have been around the family my whole life. It just stinks we had a chance to be really really good this year and we didn’t have that year.  Instead a team like Liberty just won a NCAA game tonight, Wofford won a game, UC Irvine won a game, Buffalo won a game as a 6th seed, Belmont from the OVC got an at large bid.

So why can’t Marshall do that?

The best part of my post above is I got a smite for telling the truth. I guess as they say the truth hurts. We got out done this year by a bunch of teams in perceived worse conferences than us. Saying that I will still cheer for The Herd and watch Tuesday and be just as fired up next year. I don’t quit on the Herd.

  • lexky. One of the best post of the year, this year was a chance to be something special. Instead of continually lamenting the loss of Penava the focus should be on why we were in the position we are. It appears we are still lukewarm on the idea of recruiting big men, especially ones who can defend. Watching the mid majors in the tournament one has to wonder why they are successful getting big men and we aren't.
