Coach Z was not fired.  He announced his resignation before the start of the 82-83 season (in late Oct 1982). 

Little remembered fact - Carl Tacy nearly returned to Marshall Univ as head coach.  Two things prevented Tacy's return:  (a) the unexpected ACC tournament run by Wake Forest (to the finals - losing to NC State; this was the only way NC State makes the NCAA tourney, which leads to their Cinderella run to the tournament championship), which pushed Wake Forest to the NIT (and a decent run); and (b) landing Parade and McDonald's All-American and Williamson HS stand-out Mark Cline.

'Charles Jones was the last recruit of Stu Aberdeen, just before his fatal heart attack. If Stu had lived, he would have brought some unreal talent to Marshall.  He had Leo Rautins committed, but after Stu passed,  he went on to a great career at Syracuse.

After Stu passed away Leo chose the second MU on his list, Minnesota and transferred to Syracuse.

Speaking of Charles Jones. I will never forget the WVU game at the Cam when his mom sang the national anthem. The dude went off on the Mounties. I have a great HD picture of Charles dunking over two Mounties - it's priceless!
