  • What is really cool is to go back and check out the home games of the 75 and 76 world series.  Back then NBC had the games and the radio announcers for each club got to be on the TV broadcast of their respective teams home games.  For Brennaman it just so happened it was only his 2nd and 3rd year with the club and would only get to call one more world series in 1990.  In the 75 Series he was in the booth with Curt Gowdy and I believe Tony Kubek.  In 76 he was with Joe Garagiola and Kubek.  I have the lp album entitled "This one belongs to the Reds" from 1975.

I believe it is fairly well known that Gowdy had a dislike for the Reds. Probably due to his Dodger ties. He made a sarcastic comment about the Reds' "awesome power" over the air, only to have Brennaman point out soon after that the #7 and #8 hitters in the Reds lineup had hit back-to-back HR. I guess a lot of people picked up on Gowdy's attitude and complained. So it wasn't a surprise when Gowdy was missing from the booth for the '76 World Series.

EDIT: Actually research showed that he did considerable broadcasting for Boston-area teams early in his career. He was there honored post-mortem in 2006. So there you have it.

  • Marty & Joe were the soundtrack to Summer in the 70’s in Huntington. Walk down the street and never miss a play on a weekend, so many radios tuned to WGNT to hear the Reds. On the caravan once I think they said that one third of the non-Cincinnati area ticket purchases came from our tri-state area back then.

I would have given anything to be there today. I was in 4th grade when Marty took over, and listened religiously. Hard to imagine anyone else doing that job.

There is also an album of the 76 Reds. I found it in an antique store on 14th street west. Made a good addition to the collection, since I also have the 75 album.

Just thinking...Doug Flynn ( a backup player on the 75 and 76 teams) is listed as a Reds Broadcaster.  I think he assisted with select broadcasts.

I know he was a reserve player but worth a mention.

  • A couple great memories from listening to Marty. Sitting on the my grandfathers front porch after supper on a hot summer evening with the Reds game blaring on the radio and him getting frustrated yelling at the radio Win they were losing. Also since I was 7 yrs old sneaking a small transistor radio into bed with an ear piece so my parents didn’t here the radio for night games. 😄 Good times.

  • I’ve said since the ceremony to announce the new baseball stadium that Marty should be invited to the first game. He’s long been a proponent of MU getting a baseball stadium and has talked about it numerous times during Reds broadcasts.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Heck, I've often thought that if MU ever got a new baseball facility, the media room/facility at the stadium should be named after Marty, the way he publicly scolded/shamed the MU administration, etc., for the lack of a decent baseball facility at the University!!

I'm pretty sure that Frank McCormick and Ed Kennedy were the broadcasters on television during the 60's.  I tried to watch the 30-40 games that WSAZ-TV would broadcast each year, usually on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons.  Here is a full list of Reds announcers down through the years:  https://www.mlb.com/reds/history/all-time-rosters/broadcasters

  • Just found the below web site about Cinny Beers. https://www.wcpo.com/entertainment/local-a-e/do-you-remember-the-cincinnati-beers-of-old

And if you’re old enough, you have to remember familiar slogans like:

    > “Vas You Efer in Zinzinnati? (Burger)

    > “It’s Too Good To Be Beer” (Little Kings Cream Ale)

    > “Simply A Better Beer” (Christian Moerlein)

    > “All the Way with 14K” (Hudepohl)

    > “It’s registered pure” (Wiedemann)

    > “Bound to Be Better” (Schoenling)

    >“A Man’s Beer” (Bavarian)

    > “It’s Happy Hudy Time” (Hudepohl)

    > “You Never Had It So Smooth” (Burger)

    > “It’s Mel-O-Dry to Satisfy” (Bavarian)

    > “Do Yourself A Flavor. Have A Hudy.” (Hudepohl)

    > “Let Us Lighten Up Your Life” (Hudy Delight)

    > “Give the Hi Sign” (Wiedemann)

    > “Artesian Spring Water Makes The Difference” (Burger)

    > “Brewed the Old World Way (Bavarian)

I found some Red Top bottle openers in my parents basement. Red Top beer of Cinny was before my time.  ;D

  • At some point in time, Wiedeman had a brewery or bottling company in Covington, KY with a roof top bar and Wiedamann on all the taps.

Nice in spring & fall and cool summer evenings

A lot of German immigrants moved to Cincinnati after World War 2,  they made a lot of German beers.

Yeah, they were in a lot of areas of Ohio and PA, E-Man.  One of their beers you use to see advertised around the Tri State and Huntington at one time was Augustiner, which I believe was brewed in Columbus.  On Channel 3 I believe they use to sponsor, IIRC, the weather telecast, usually done by Jule Hoffman.  Remember their slogan was "Richer, keener, Augustiner, . . . one of America's two finest beers".  They never said what the other one was!!

Remember, too, there was one of these breweries even closer . . . the Fesenmeier Brewery in West Huntington, I believe!!!

  • The Fesenmeier Brewery was located at 14th Street West and Madison Avenue in Huntington. It took up an entire city block to the C&O spur line to Monroe Avenue. It was torn down and they built a shopping center. Tearing the brewery was a big mistake for just historical reasons.  The Fesnmeier family sold it and the new owners ( al local investment group) changed the name to Little Switzerland Brewery) produce one of the first craft beers (Charge Beer) brewed in America that was made to the German Beer Purity laws, Reinheitsgebot. Sam Adams Beer used the same concept years later. When Little Switzerland closed, Augustiner of Columbus purchased some of the equipment,

You can google Fesenmeier and get a lot of information about it and Huntington. Ernie Salavator's son has a great site about the brewery.
