Should we go back to 2-1s?

  • Just saw where Coastal scheduled Virginia to a 2-1. Obviously 2 games at Virginia with the middle fame being at Coastal.

Seems like we haven?t been as successful lately scheduling 1-1s. Should we go back to accepting 2-1s in order to get some regional P5s back in the Joan?

I think back to the Purdue game to start the season and how awesome the atmosphere was. Would love to have something like that again.

  • I saw where wvu is doing a 2 for 1 with Ohio U. I don't like them, but that would fill up the stadium. I know some oppose playing them, but it would generate a sell out. I think Huff would win the game in Htown.

Did I see a post on this site that we turned down a 2-1 with wvu for football or was the post about paying a basketball game in morganhole with a return game for MU as the home team in Charleston? Maybe I misread the post?

  • Yes, let's go back to 2 for 1 with the  big boys.  One for 1 with the lower P5s.

  • Yes and yes?having a P5 every other year and then having a team like Boise, App St, Liberty or ECU makes for a good home schedule.

  • Guys, I think our current scheduling philosophy is/was Hammy's personal preference.  Currently, only Power team we have currently scheduled in Huntington is VA TECH.  And that basically is a 2-1 deal when we agreed to play them down in Blacksburg a couple or so years back to give them a shot for 6 wins to continue their string of bowl eligibility.  To do so, Tech agreed to another 1 for 1 deal.

I still like the the Big $$$$ games every so often with the likes of Notre Dame, etc.  We need to get back to picking up those kinds of games, IMO.  Still pi$$es me off that some how or other Pitt has managed to get off the hook on the return game they were suppose to play at the JOAN in 2020.  Don't tell me it was specified in the contract.  I know that at least one OTHER ACC school had a game at a G5 school wiped out in 2020 and still plans to make it up AT the G5 program!  If Pitt just flat out refused to "honor" the return trip to Huntington, that says a lot about their integrity, or lack thereof. If that is the case, then I certainly plan to TIGHTLY hold my nose and root for the Chickeneers when they play the Panthers in a couple of games in the next few years!  May even let out with a few, loud "Sh#t on Pitt" cheers, too!   If the contract prepared gave them an easy out, that is SOLELY on Hamwreck, IMO!

Yes we need to for several reasons. We need the money games, we need the exposure and we need to win some of these big games to be considered for a playoff spot. You go undefeated and one of the wins isn't a P5 then it was for nothing.

I'd much rather watch us play at Virginia Tech on ESPN then play at home vs a FCS school on Facebook

  • Glad I'm not the only one. Scheduling has changed a lot over the last decade, and so has everything in terms of the CFP Access Bowl and potentially the future CFP expansion.

We need to get back to doing 2-1s with mid tier P5s imo. Really hope O'Malley or the next AD gets this going.

This was BB. WVU had opening and offered return game to Charleston in which MU would keep all revenue.  MU declined. N Texas ending up filling spot.

  • We need a better scheduling philosophy for sure. This years schedule is crap really. Best schedule we had ever was ruined by covid. We need at a minimum 1 p5 and I'd like ti see 2 every ooc

Totally agree. Strength-of-schedule is a big factor nowadays when climbing the rankings, getting picked for the CFP Access Bowl, etc.

  • For the most part, I can't complain about our out-of-conference scheduling. I just really wish we'd stop playing FCS teams. We play enough conference games against opponents ranked well into FCS territory. The only exception would be during seasons where we play a ranked P5s like Louisville, Notre Dame, Penn state, etc. and need to nurse our wounds.

    My ideal out-of-conference schedule:

    1) Middling or lower tier P5 like Purdue or Pitt.
    2) High ranked G5 like App St or Boise.
    3) Rivalry G5 like ECU or Ohio.
    4) Programs Marshall rarely if never plays (Navy, Army, etc.)

I'm not a big fan of being paid for the beat down but I'm fine with the occasional money game every other year to keep the program solvent and as a reminder that we're still FBS. And if it takes a 2-1 to make #1 on the list happen, it is what is.

If C-USA is gutted again, out-of-conferencing scheduling will be even more important than it is now.

  • With money becoming tight, it may be more of a necessity than a true want to. I would suspect basketball may have to do something like this as well. It's probably good that we do. Although I liked what MH did with our schedules.

  • Would like to see these teams rotated with one of our OOC games each year:

ECU, App State (if we're not in a conference with them), Ohio, Miami, OH, and Toledo

  • Yes. 2-1 each season and a big payout game at least every other season.

Build that schedule out as strong as possible and try to have a P5 opponent at home and as well as a big P5 on the road in the same season with an ECU type team sprinkled in.

This is how you build interest and then excitement. I?m sorry but I?m not getting excited over Ohio, Appy, Liberty and some IAA.

Football has been bleeding for awhile and it needs to stop.

  • Look at next year for example. Notre Dame- wow

Imagine if we had a home game with a P5 as well and even Appy who?s currently on the schedule. Purdue, Pitt, Wake Forest, Illinois, Indiana.

Nothing exciting about Norfolk state and a road trip to BGSU. I mean convenient and easy road trips but schedule wise- meh.
