  • I don't recall anyone saying it was a done deal, but I live in Roanoke and it was a very active rumor.

Someone saying it's a 99.9% chance is pretty damn close to done deal

Much like Stan Parrish' final swansong game with Marshall versus Appy St in 1985, Huff and Marshall lose 40-0 to WKU. Nonetheless, Huff is named head coach at Virginia Tech on Monday afternoon.ea

  • One thing for sure , with VT having an interest in Huff , even after the season we had , it wont take long for the bigger schools to snatch him when he starts winning . His name was out there before he came here so I bet we will have a new coach within two to three years .

The dude lost what little credibility he had.

I am sure Huff and his agent will soon work on his escape plan.

You?re right so I asked my brother who told me he was a former GA at tech under bud foster. Not as odd once you peel the onion back. Not at all what I thought they would bring in!

Well, think back a few years.  When Frank Beamer retired, a lot of Tech fans were grumbling that the Hokies O had gotten stale, not kept up with the new fad, high octane Os that were popular elsewhere.  So they hired Fuente from Memphis, where he had, apparently, a rep as some kind of offensive "guru".  Now he's gone, and during his tenure Tech's offenses never hit those lofty levels of productivity than many had envisioned!

  • Marshall had a QB years ago named Jim Pry who later, IIRC, was in college coaching for a while.  Wonder if this guy is any relation?

  • As to my previous post, I leader read an article on the new HC at VA Tech.  51 y.o. grew up and went to school, played football in the Lexington, VA, area where his father, Jim Pry, was an assistant coach at VMI from 1884-88.  I'm almost certain his dad was at MU, perhaps played under Coach Moss or Coach Tolley in the late 60s, prior to the air crash.

He is/was a huge Doc supporter. I think he may be related to Litton - I'm serious.

    Good memory! According to Wki:
"Pry was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the son of Altoona High graduates Jim and Kathy Pry. His father played college football at Marshall and is a long-time college coach.[1] Pry, a 1988 graduate of Lexington High in Lexington, Va., was an all-region quarterback and defensive back.[2]"

Jim Pry is currently in his fifth year as OC at Bethune-Cookman (HBC). He also coached at West Liberty; VMI; Akron; Darmouth and other schools.
    Per the B-C website:
A native of Altoona, Pa., Pry got his start in coaching at his alma mater, Marshall University, as a graduate assistant from 1973-74. Pry graduated from Marshall with a degree in Physical Education in 1974, going on to earn his Master?s Degree from the school in the same field in 1975.

Tech was Michael Vick, that one running back (forget his name, Suggs maybe), and Frank's special teams.  Outside of those three things they really haven't been special since late 90s, early 2000s.  It's not like they're going to get back to their glory days.  That equated to about 3 seasons.  I like VaTech.  They've been a friend to Marshall.  But they are not an elite team.  They've had a few flash in the pans.  That's about it.

Best thing about watching VaTech was seeing how much bigger Beamer's goiter was each season.

Agree about your assessment.  Again, fans grumbled in later years about Beamer's O.  He made his bones at Tech primarily with stout D and outstanding special teams play.

Believe Tech has the resources, rabid and large enough fan base, and other factors, to be an ACC elite team, in top 4 or 5 yearly, often challenging for the championship game.  Only, ND, Clemson, Florida State, and perhaps Miami would challege them year in and year out.  Their facilities certainly rank near the top of their league, IMO.  If Pry is the right guy, then look for overflowing crowds to be rocking Lane Stadium every game, and night conference games at Lane will again become nightmares for most other ACC schools.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.  Thanks to the Marshall connection, through his father, I'll be watching Coach Pry and Tech closely, and pulling for them, especially early next September when they welcome the Chickeneers to B-Burg!!

Brent mentioned his dad in the speech and also mentioned Marshall.

I?ve always wished VT well. We have family ties to coach Beamer. Their success continues his foundation. Best of luck to coach Pry and awesome to see him mention Marshall.
