  • Some Herd fans think the MAC is a little bit better than the defunct WVIAC , they are not. The MAC and CUSA arent much different , CUSA is better yes , but not by much. We should have won last nite but didnt , not the end of the world. I would look for us to lose one of the next two games too , its a long season. We'll be fine

  • I can?t believe the criticism I?ve seen for Taylor and Kinsey in this thread, it?s unbelievable. I can see criticism for Defense and rebounding ,free-throw shooting, but these kids played their heart out. These threads  have been more about vendettas than objective fan criticism.

We have a lot of knee jerking. I remember all the praise for George and Toussaint in the game where George didn?t miss a free throw. I don?t think OAK missed free throws either.

Has Oak ever made a 3pt shot? Just curious because I honestly don?t remember one at all.

  • Honestly Dan lacks discipline for his players and they don?t value the ball. That?s at least what I see from Iowa.

You can be to tough and throttle them but outside of Taylor and Kinsey everyone else needs a reality check.

  • FWIW:  Some of the posters may be underrating Akron? Akron was picked for picked for 5th place in the MAC, almost for fourth place. FWIW: Their coach has  proved he can win in the MAC when he was coaching Ohio U. He took Ohio U to the Sweet Sixteen in the Big Dance in 2012. He has been doing a nice job at Akron after going  95-75 at Illinois, but only 37-53 in the Big Ten. He finished in first place in the MAC in the 2019-2020 season.  Check out his record in the below link.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Groce

2021-22 MAC Men?s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll

Buffalo ? 143 points (11 first place votes)
        Ohio ? 126 points
        Toledo ? 107 points (1)
        Kent State ? 98 points
        Akron ? 95 points
        Bowling Green ? 93 points
        Miami ? 92 points
        Ball State ? 54 points
        Western Michigan ? 44 points
        Central Michigan ? 34 points
        Eastern Michigan ? 29 points
        Northern Illinois ? 21 points
    https://getsomemaction.com/news/2021/11/3/mens-basketball-preseason-coaches-poll-all-mac-teams-announced.aspx

Main thing this "poll" tells me is what I've thought since the season started:  that Akron would be the easiest team from the MAC that we would play, and therefore our best shot for a victory.  That said, a win later this month at either Toledo or at Ohio would be a pleasant surprise.  Still believe that in a lot of MAC Quarters, a lot of them relish the opportunity to play and BEAT Marshall; sort of way of thumbing those noses at us, since we left the League twice.

Of course, our Coach's take is that is just another "meaningless" out of conference game and our "real season" starts with the first conference game.  Don't know why MU just doesn't throw open the CAM"s doors and charge absolutely NOTHING to attend all our OOC home games, since they are just "meaningless" exhibitions!!

  • If we any to be a successful respected mid major team we can?t lose games to Akron and Campbell or any other MAC team.  If other teams can win why can?t Marshall?  Our resources aren?t perfect but we can still win. If we don?t take OOC game seerious and only play for four games in March then why sell season tickets and why watch the games?   I am not saying we didn?t take the game serious the other night but we hear a lot of only four days in March matter.  Sure it matters then so you can get to the NCAA tournament but to be ready for them you have to have players. And to get talent you need to show you can win.  It?s past time for us to win just like it was the last several years in football. It is time to stop with excuses and execute.  We have excuses after almost every game.

We are never going to be a respected mid-major if something doesn?t change and that doesn?t mean a change in HC. It could be a lot of things from assistant coaches to recruiting or style of play modifications.   I love watching our style but we seem to find ways to lose.

Hopefully we bounce back on Saturday.  I look forward to seeing the Herd in Richmond on 12/11 against EKU but that one worried me. 40 minutes of pressing and shooting a lot of three plus the emotion side for AW?the place could be a tough place to win.

i don't pretend to have an answer as to how do you bring it all together, but i agree 100% that other teams do it much more consistently.  i also agree you can't blame one or two people on a team, unless it's obvious by committee.  if i recall correctly, even Harrion wasn't obvious at first to the majority of fans, but probably, neither was Huck.  i really do like DD's general philosophy.  there are just SO MANY factors.  we need the cosmos to align and not in an apocalyptical way  :)

  • By the time we get to the point where people start talking about what we can do the rest of the season, I've already lost interest.  That means the first part of the season is dogsh-t.  I know we'll probably end up with 20ish wins and a game or two in the tournament and a top 150 RPI, just like every other year.  There's no surprise.  There's no "Hey those guys are pretty good."  Same as football.  Where's the magical 28 or 29 win season that a lot of other teams get to have once a decade or so?  We get reruns.

I'm gonna say this and I don't care what the repercussions are, but we are the worst evaluators of basketball talent in the history of this sport at this point in time at Marshall and for the last several years.  The old man may be able to work with guys that already made an NBA squad, but he couldn't find a guy that could get to the NBA through college if he wanted to.  Kinsey can jump out of the gym but he doesn't have the tools to be more than a highlight reel.  We've had guards that no one can even remember their names that were better at getting the ball to the hoop or to another guy that could than Taylor.  The only legitimate talent we've had during Dan's tenure was Elmore, who fell into his lap, and spent his senior year waving at the cameras instead of winning ball games.  CJ was too inconsistent his senior year to be included as a top talent.  Too many wasted scholarships to count.  Too many projects to ever finish one.  And on top of all that we have an apparent system that you can't play in unless you're formally on the Ethiopian National Team and half starved to death or the complete opposite and the floor sags when you run down court.

The new slogan for Marshall sports should be "Just wait 'til next year."  And then repeat.  At this point not winning a single game would at least be a change and somewhat interesting.  Stagnant and mediocre sucks.  I, too, thought Dan was onto something after 2018.  It was a fart in a jar and now it's gone along with the smell of victory.  This sh-t right here is why people don't go to games and make our sports a big enough priority to show up in droves.  Feels like a chore to go down there, find parking, get herded through the cattle gates and get to your seat to see the same crap you saw the last game, win or lose, and that you saw the last season, and the last 5 years, except maybe one year and even then it was a lucky tournament win not a complete season.  We were a missed layup away from losing that game to WKU in the finals.

Wish them all the best but I'm completely apathetic to basketball.  Don't watch on TV, don't go to games, don't usually even check scores unless I see a thread here.  Just don't care.  Past time for change.  Might not matter at this point.

About 2/3rds of this post is spot on and then 1/3 of it is absolutely BS.

Idk if Kinsey will end up being an NBA player, I think we will absolutely get a look, but Idk if he'll make it. But, to pretend like all he has is his ability to jump out of the gym is a gross underappreciation of the talent and effort he gives us each night. You don't average 20 ppg by just being able to jump high. Kinsey has one of the best mid-range games in the country, he is incredibly crafty at getting to his spot and getting his shot off. Against Akron, he single handily kept us in the ball game at times by going and getting a tough bucket especially when they got up 11.

He has improved his skills every year he's got here and it's not like he is getting his points in an inefficient way he has shot over 45% from the field in every single season he's been here.

Then the disrespect of Taylor is also absolutely ridiculous. In the last 20 years of Marshall basketball, we may have two PGs that I can think of better than him Damier Pitts and Jon Elmore. And Pitts isn't even unquestionably better as for his career Pitts averaged 12.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.7 Turnovers, and 0.8 steals a game while he shot 40.4%

In Pitts best season, his junior year, he averaged 16.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 2.8 turnovers and 0.6 steals while shooting 40.5% from the field.

Taylor on the other hand for his career is averaging 11.4 ppg, 5.2 rebounds, 4 assists, 2.3 turnovers and 1.9 steals while shooting 44.8% from the field.

I think that everyone would agree that Pitts was a pretty damn good player for us but if you look at the stats it would seem that Taylor is a better rebounder, a better defender and even at passing and taking care of the ball and while Pitts at this point scored a little more in his career, Taylor does it more efficiently.

So, I'd love to know what PGs we have had in the last 20 years that we've forgotten about that are better than Taylor? Because I don't think you'll find any you can make a legit argument on other than the two I named.

This, plus the foul by Taylor was a game decider and one of worst I have ever witnessed.

  • I am waiting to see when DD?s brother steps in at last to really elevate MBB AT MARSHALL! Mid-Major mentality has ruined the sports programs because of the progressives in this University. To have Soccer win a real National Championship was amazing for once. The rest have shown me and other?s Marshall has to break itself loose from WV little brother political mentality. You do known education is all about business because he who has the gold calls the shots people that?s why their schools colors are blue and gold so, same old after the Civil War Carpetbaggers BS as we get the blues and they the gold in our face. Just like this Covid worldwide war on humanity we stink to high heaven people. Sports are to keep us from killing each other but that?s out the window as we now see humanity has become the true sporting event. Please wake up! John Marshall may just come back to life to kick your (@/:; for this mediocre mentality! If I offended anyone so be it!

  • I see your point about George. I think that is also why Obinna comes off the bench. He gives the team a spark. I have been shaking my head since the first exhibition game with Byers and Goran starting. I always thought that Obinna would start, since he did last year, and Early would be a starter. Some mentioned Early put on some weight. I can understand that can slow him down a little. Still think the lineup should be:
    Taylor
    Kinsey
    Early
    George
    Obinna
    Agree
