MU pays more than we think

    Chuck Landon
    Daily Mail sportswriter

HUNTINGTON -- Everyone has heard all the poor-mouthing.
You've probably done some of it yourself.

    I know I have.

At one time or another, nearly everyone connected with Marshall University has despaired over the school's inability to pay coaches competitive salaries.

But was that perception or misconception?

That's what Marshall Athletic Director Bob "Kayo" Marcum wanted to find out.

  • Very interesting story.  I had the misconception that our coaches were the worst paid coaches in American football, European football, foosball, and futsal -- combined!  It's good to see we are right in the thick of things with C-USA schools, considering many of these schools have more academic resources than Marshall as well.  Although, we MUST improve.  We must strive to become #1 in all categories, if possible, and not settle for that "middle-of-the-pack" attitude or any complacency.

You would think with many of the whiny, obstructionist posters on the boards that we paid our coaches in moonshine and chickens. Kayo may irritate me in many ways, but he is dead right when he says the Marshall job isn't a good job, it's a GREAT job. Let's act like it is for f*ck's sake................

  • Garbanjo, you said it before I could.  Great post.  Our HC job is a great job. I think at times folks on this board forget the national respect that we enjoy in the college football world!  Every program has it's warts, but not every program has done what we have done in the last 10 years!

  • Correct me if I"m wrong but it looks like excluding the one time payout last year to Pruett, the article says that Pruett would've been 6th out of 12th.  That's the middle of the pack.  I'm not saying Marshall pays chicken feed here or anything, but I'm not exactly pounding my chest with pride about being an average paying job.

  • I think we can put to rest the bad-mouthing about not paying our coaches well. BP has made $400,000+ for several years with salary and incentives. His continual complaining about salaries of assistants does not now hold water. This is a great job from both a compensation and reputation point of view!

  • It's a great job.

I hope Kueck and his assistants appreciate it going forward.

Kueck just had a great one fall in his lap.

  • I think o boy Landon is laying on us thick with "how good everything is with Marcum".

If our coaches are paid so good then why are we always losing coaches to different schools.
    This article is a wash.

    It means nothing.

  • DJ, you nailed it. This is just one big smoke screen. It just simply is not major college funding, but it is better than what Marcum is getting us.

    GO THUNDERINGHERD!

  • I think the article was right on.

He's right it isn't as bad as we seem to think it is.

Lasly, we don't lose coaches to MAC shools and only a few times have lost them to CUSA schools.  His article compares us to our former conference mates and new CUSA mates which seems to be reasonable.  There has been much discussion about where we come up short in CUSA.  Now, it seems that the one area is support facilities....as our coaches salaries and bb arena and FB stadium are on par.

We all know that we can't don't compare well with big major schools like big 10 and ACC??  Do we really need an article to tell us that??

Marcum really hasn't made changes in the salary structure and hasn't impacted how much money we have for that....so I really don't know how that article says things are great under kayo.  What it does say is Kayo had heard all speculation about how short we are in salaries and did some analysis.  The analysis shows we compare well with our mid major peers at least with regard to salaries.

    It's not that hard folks.

  • then why doesn't he do an article based on all the facts about why the d@mn IPF isn't here yet or in the planning stages of being a reality.

That's what the people in Huintington want to know!!!!!!

The hell with what our LB coach makes.

I wanna know why all the things promised a few years ago are not getting done.

Do an article on that $hit.

Instead, we keep seeing these brain washing articles on how the glass is half full.

There is a conspiracy at works here, fellows, and it starts with the Huntington media.

I guess I read a different article because it sounds like while our top 2 assistants do well, the rest of our staff drops down to 11th out of 12 and our Head Coach is a middle of the pack salary.  Hardly impressive.

This article was nothing more than a smoke screen.  And not even a good one at that because I'm not overly impressed with it.

  • BGT, I read the article a second time, and believe there is a lot of substance in your post. There, is substance in what I had to say as well. In addition, if Landon, or any one else from their staff is looking into how much MU pay its coaches, it means they will the use the information, eventulally against them. IMO.

  • well Dj

sounds like you want an article on another subject.

i just think it's funny.  what little piece of the media world we have on our side, you all see conspiracy etc in everything they write.  many trash it.

just kind of odd to me.

disagree.  fine.  ask for other subjects. whatever.

but this herd fan mentality is really counter productive.

that article is what it is.... a discussion of what we pay compared to others.
