Pruett family facing change head-on

It’s about a week after Marshall University’s head football coach announced his retirement. He’s in the bedroom and his wife, Elsie, is in the kitchen of their Barboursville home when the phone rings.

In most cases, Elsie simply would answer the phone. She’s used to manning the house while her husband, Bobby Pruett, is at Marshall coaching or traveling the country recruiting.

But this time, she waits. He’s retired now. He can answer it, she says.

But the phone keeps ringing. Later, when Bobby wanders out in a Thundering Herd warm-up suit, Elsie asks that next time he get the phone, which still rings off the hook at the Pruett household.

That’s one of many, many changes the family will experience now that Pruett has retired after about four decades of coaching ball.

The mystery is what he’s going to do with all his energy.
