Read somewhere, bust, a few seasons ago that I believe CUSA and maybe some other leagues did not want to participate or have anything to do with this "Mid-major" poll.  Their reason, IIRC, is that the terms "Majors" and "mid-majors" are in no organizational documents, rule books, etc., and were never officially "created" by any sanctioned organizational D-1 basketball group, etc.  In other words, they were just "terms" used by media talking heads primarily to differentiate between the "big boy conferences" and the rest of the riff raff.  Probably the usual suspects, Bilas, et. al., at ESPN.  Someone at CUSA, commissioner, or whomever, just though it would "legitimize" and reinforce the differences between those conferences, and support the lower, second-class status that the term "mid-major" infers.

Mid-major is completely made up by ESPN.  That is it and all.  Ncaa Divison 1 is the same division.

  • It lists the voters and conferences included in the link. CUSA is not listed.

  • Correct me if I?m wrong but I believe CUSA is still not designated as a mid major due to the old Memphis/Louisville/Cincinnati and maybe even VT days?

Yes it's not considered a mid major league, it's usually a top ten league and it is this season as well. They have 5 teams in the top 100 rpi, vs i think, 1 for the sunbelt and Marshall on the cusp.

Not sure about the cusa net rankings but I'd assume they smoke the sunbelt as well. People still don't realize here how good cusa was in basketball, that'll change a bit after this season with the aac shake up but cusa will still be a pretty good basketball league with WKU, middle, La Tech, liberty, etc

Agree and it wasn't even close no matter what the RPI showed. But I think the SB will improve now with the 4 teams they brought in. Marshall, SMiss, ODU and JMU will be 4 of the top teams in the league most years. CUSA was probably the most underrated league there was to be a one bid league. That league was not east to win with NTexas, WKU, UAB, LT, ODU etc. and This year FAU is looking very strong.

  • The 4 additions to the SB is a combined 27-8 in basketball. Looks like those 4 really added strength to the conference. And SMiss, Marshall, JMU are all in the top 4 with Louisiana. Only ODU is behind at 5-4 record.

  • Pleased with the season but as said above, he "mid major" was a made up ESPN designation to downgrade the teams because they were not in the so called P5.

Just like G5 and P5 in football. At least in basketball they get a chance to get it done in the tournament. Hopefully the 12 team playoff will at least give a crumb to one football team a year.

  • I read a post on a MAC member board comparing it to the 1-AA football poll. I noticed that leagues like the Atlantic 10 are not included. It is what it is. At least it gives MU some respect.

It would be the same as a G5 poll in football.

If you go to the bottom of the page, you see the voters. It appears that the voters are college coaches like Steve Lutz head coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Interesting group of coaches voting, anywhere from Purdue Fort Wayne to a couple of MAC and Ivy League coaches. I would imagine they are just looking at the records?

Ironically, P5/G5 is the same thing.  We're all Div I FBS in football.

I'm pretty sure that mid-major was a term long before ESPN. Personally, I like the term. Like it or not, Marshall is a mid-major in both football and basketball. As a mid-major, they have the ability each year to earn a sit at the table with the big programs. Mid-majors have gone to the Final Four multiple times in recent years.
