  • I could see us in the near future replacing the bleachers of Herd Heaven with chair back seating with railings for safety.

With AC coming soon that could be some nice seating.

It could easily bring capacity back to over 7000.

Like I've said several times before, MU well over a decade or so ago should have started, even slowly if they had to, replacing the nosebleed bleachers with chairback seats.  Even if, due to money restraints, they would have replaced only 1 or 2 rows in the CAM every year.  Probably didn't even consider this due to the atrocious ventilation in that area of the arena (Low O2, no air movement, etc.)  Wasn't until about halfway through Hammy's AD tenure that they made some attempts, changing air baffles, perhaps new ceiling ventilation fans, more powerful fan motors, etc.

  • Tear it down and build something nice. I wish they had just upgraded the Field House until we could have gotten a better basketball arena.  WVU sucked the life out of Marshall. Jet port et al.

The only thing that ever made it bearable was good basketball, it has always been a dump. We were lucky just to get any kind of arena with a roof over it.

  • I can foresee that upper area being totally re-engineered into boxes, wouldn't that be a hoot...

  • We literally AVERAGED, for the entire season, more than 5,500 just 2-3 years ago.

    Surely this is just temporary?

  • Yeah, but if one other D1 school in "poor ole downtrodden, economically declining WV" can turn out huge numbers for basketball, why can't the other D1 school do something similar, attendance wise?  Is there just so much else to do in and around the vibrant and stimulating night life in "booming" Huntington?  Or perhaps the result of the loss of 30,000 people plus in the same "booming", growing City and its runaway economic growth?  Or is it a result of the caliber of the basketball program itself and how it has captured virtually ALL the hearts and minds of the City, the County, and, indeed, all the surrounding areas for a hundred, hundred and fifty miles from MU, including virtually the WHOLE MU student body itself?  Or is it all of the above?

Its a little bit of everything.  Students do not care anywhere, look at Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin.  They call out the student sections all the time for not showing up.  People always say poor Huntington/Marshall.  But the simple fact is it is not just a MU problem, it is a nationwide problem.  But there are ways to combat this...sustained winning, playing meaningful games and making these occasions more fan friendly.

  • The other school in our state posted their 4th Highest Attendance ever last year despite having a losing record.  Inability (or unwillingness) to schedule quality opponents at home and having zero games on over the air television makes us a non-entity in our own city.  We are making excuses and it is disappointing.

I think you make a great point. wvu plays nationally know teams that the casual WV resident recognizes. I would guess they are gaining fans in our area due to this factor. I also think there is a downward trend in college athletic attendance and more students are not interested in college sports. I think MU is currently fighting these issues.

  • Looks good! Should make the crowd look bigger and brings everyone closer to the floor.
We don?t draw very close to what?s available now ticket wise anyway, with exception of maybe a game or two.
    Makes Arena brighter. Good move.

  • Back in the days when Herd Heaven was packed it turned into Herd Hell.
Before the improved ventilation it was so hot.

  • I think the floor looks amazing. And the tarps in Herd Heaven look very good. It actually looks better than the Football tarps. Maybe because it's inside and the way the CAMs structure is. But it looks very professional and almost like it is constructed like that. I would love to see all the seats in bright Kelly green. If we aren't going to get a new arena and I don't see that happening for many many years, then they just need to keep doing these things one at a time. Just the well done tarp and floor has made a big difference. The seats would make another huge difference.

It was still hot in the late 90's.

  • Espn+ is great for the out of towners but it's not good that we don't have games on local TV. Thundering Herd network was awesome back in the day. I hope the students show up for the conference season.

  • These are great temporary solutions until we can get into a new arena with actual amenities.

I think the both the floor and the tarps look sharp.

It could look sharp like it does, or they could have made it look cheap with a bunch of Ad banners to get a few extra bucks of revenue and make it look crappy.

    Which would you rather have?

That seating is uncomfortable and sight lines are bad with the banners/butterfly design of the building.

Make it as nice as we can and build toward a new arena in 10 years.

Well said.  Everyone is trying to make things better for both football and basketball and we are finally getting a baseball stadium.  Good work by all.
