  • At 4-2.

But by my count we have played 5 home games so far. Not encouraging.

  • I think GSU would be in first place in conference play being 4-2 with the win over MU. Now they (GSU) are only (4-2) 11-8 overall and MU is (4-2) 15-4 overall along with USM also ay (4-2) 15-4 overall and MU holds the advantage over USM since we have already played and beat them so by default with overall record MU is in first place in SBC!

  • This upcoming road trip - if we can take 2 from beatable teams -  then I think we have a good chance to go 5-4 overall on the road in conference. Combine that with the possibility of holding serve the rest of the way at home ... would put us at 13-5. Doesn't sound like that great but with the league parity we have seen so far 13-5 might well be good enough for a bye.

  • On ESPN's Marshall Basketball page it says that MU is in 1st place in the SBC but when you go to the SBC conference listings it has USM on top and MU is right underneath them insinuating 2nd place, which cannot be true since we have already played and beat USM? Strange?!?!?!

  • Need to get those two wins. February is going to be a rough month playing so many games on the road. That last road trip to close out the season at JMU and ODU could decide our position in the conference tournament.

Yes we need to get these 2 road wins at Texas St and Arkansas St. then come back home and get ULM and Georgia St. 8-2!!!

  • I've already marked our last 2 conf (road) games as L's. I'm a bad fan.

Those will be tough. We have App, ODU, LU and JMU all on the road left. I would be thrilled with 3 out of 4.

  • Like many have said, we need to win the rest of our home games. Road games are going to be tough. We already know what it is like to play at ODU. Jones will have his team ready for us down there. The season is just getting interesting. So many intriguing games left.

  • We are learning the sun belt is a very competitive conference. Marshall is in a good position but has some work to do. I think the team that wins the sun belt will figure out how to win a few key road matchups. If MU can make it though January and that tough road stretch early February with a couple of road wins they should be in a good spot.

    Gotta get their rest
Play dominate and not let up
    Work of those foul shots.

  • Things should get a lot more clear after next Thursday and Saturday. A lot of the top teams are playing each other those 2 days. It is extremely important that we show up focused and full intensity against 2 teams we should beat "IF" we play well. Imo this road swing is crucial because we come back home for 2 that we also should win. If we take care of business we are 8-2 and would no doubt be all alone in first place. And then the tough part of the conference schedule is left with road games at App St, Louisiana, JMU, ODU and Georgia St.

  • IMO, we need to finish 8-1 at home and no worse than 6-3 on the road.

    Road Games:

Texas State/Arkansas State- Texas State can beat us but we should win, Arkansas State is horrible.
App State/Lafayette- Need to at least split these
Ga State/Coastal- Will be tough but need to win both of these.
JMU/ODU- Need to at least split these.

This, to me, looks like a good scenario. If we play like we are capable, those last two games could decide if we win the conference regular season or fall to around the third seed in the tournament.

I plan to make it to 3 of the remaining 8 road games. GAST, JMU and ODU.
Hotels booked and ready to go. I keep hearing more and more about Herd fans going to Pensacola. That should be a great trip. An easy 1 day drive and looks like a wide open tournament

I am trying to work it out logistically for my wife and I to attend. The only thing holding me back is my busiest month of the year is March.

With the parity in the conference the tournament should be a dream for you Herdmeister. Like you , my brother and I went to see every game, not just the ones Marshall played in. Also, Pensacola that time of year would make for a  great family vacation!

  • Couldn't a 6-way tie for first be interpreted as a 6-way tie got 6th? ;D

  • Out of curiosity, I figured out why the teams are listed in certain orders on different sites.

On the official SBC site (https://sunbeltsports.org/standings.aspx?path=mbball), the tie is simply broken by which team has the better overall record. We're listed ahead of USM with the same conference and overall record either because we're first alphabetically or because we beat them head-to-head.

On ESPN (https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/standings/_/group/27), it appears to be ordered by records in games against the other tied teams, which work out to the following:

    Louisiana (2-0)
    Southern Miss (2-2)
    GA Southern (1-0)
    Marshall (1-1)
    Troy (0-1)
    UL Monroe (0-2)

In real life, that tie would be broken by win percentage in the games against tied teams, but ESPN appears to be doing it by most wins and then fewest losses.
