  • I'm darn more happy about the retired John "Doc" Holliday and his career accomplishments here than his replacement, an intoxicated with ambition poser who needs to be pushed down the James River in a canoe to Chimborazo Park to commune with the person that hired him.

You guys who can't let go are hilarious. What did ole John do other than have one good year? His blowout losses are MANY more than his impressive wins, buy a mile. I appreciated Doc after what the Gibsons, KO, and Snyder did to the program, but let's not pretend he was some savior or Nick Saban. LOL!

  • I guess would be happy with a coach that lost to Akron 65-38 in Huntington?

  • I think his signature losses outnumber his signature wins. That is what happens when you hire a coach that recruits players of questionable character.
The same rain that fell on "Doc" can and will fall on his successor. It's just a matter of time. So Huff's 13-10 FBS record and 2nd and 3rd place divisional records in two years pricks up your ears? It induces somnolence in me.

Like Huff says, coaches will either leave or get fired. Nobody wanted to hire Doc so he got fired. Interesting that no school ever considered Doc for another job, that was a reflection on Doc's lack of coaching ability.  Huff will probably get hired away. Time will tell.

  • If any coach looked at this board when considering taking a Marshall coaching job they would be crazy take it.  OMG...  Doc did some good things.  One Championship, several bowl wins, and in my opinion he left Huff with a good base of players.  It was time for Doc to go.  Huff has done a good job.  Just as good or better recruiter than Doc.  Huff is a better game day coach.  If it wasn't for the loss at Bowling Green i believe Huff would have gotten a big name coaching job last year.  As i understand Huff passed up a job at Duke already.  I wouldn't bet against Huff being offered a high level SEC job within 3 years.  We get some really good QB play and we may just screw around and have one hell of a season.  Glass half full !!!

  • Sonny Randle got five seasons, Mark Snyder also got five seasons, but he only had a winner in his final season. The C-USA at that time was loaded with talented teams. It took the much maligned (in here) "Doc" two seasons to produce a winner and a subsequent bowl win vs. FIU. Albeit at the same time C-USA was still intact. Furthermore, it took "Doc" four seasons to attain a divisional title (in a competively watered down league), and five seasons to hold the conference championship trophy. "Doc" had a 6-2 record in bowl games. Time will tell with Mr. Huff. Understandably, he is the flavor of the month with many in this board and elsewhere. He may ascend at a faster rate than "Doc", leave for a higher level league, or he may founder. The ending to this story, I will leave to the imagination of the reader.

I think he was more like a Frank Solich or Rick Stockstill. Good enough to consistently have winning seasons in bad conferences while losing the games that matter and never really able to get over that hump. There are a lot of programs that would love to be in that situation but I think most of us expect more than a single championship in a decade.

His best wins were probably against a ranked App State in 2020, a really good Southern Miss in 2011, and a reasonably good Maryland in 2013. I'm grateful for the lack of 3-9 type seasons but at the same time, that isn't really saying much. Completely losing control of the team at the tail end of 2020 and then apparently being blindsided by not being renewed was just icing on the cake.

I really like Huff as a recruiter and the face of the program but am not sold on his pick of OC or his ability to manage a game. Time will tell. That being said, he's not DD or Doc. He's not getting a decade to putz around. He's got two more years with schedules that look a lot more like Snyder's than Doc's and the clock is ticking.

  • The oddsmakers do not agree. Vegas Insider has Marshall as the fifth choice of the Sun Belt field at +900 against. Troy is projected as conference champion at +300 against.

  • We have had this conversation a 100 times.  I'm stupid for entering it again, but the deal with Doc was he wasn't progressing.  He had his time and he won some decent games.  Beating Louisville away when they had Teddy Bridgewater was one (UL also won the big East that year too)

But Doc was status quo every year ,he beat 2 FCS schools + beat 2-3 hapless CUSA schools, would go 2-2 against the better C-USA schools, never win the conference and win a bowl game against a 6-6 G5 school, every year and call it a successful season.  Huff basically did the same thing the last 2 seasons.
But we play for Championships is our standard and if you don't get us there, you have to go.

Doc had some decent teams and he had ample opportunities to win, but he always seem to finish a runner up and it was definitely time for a change.

At this point if you're not a Huff fan, you're not a Marshall fan.  What purpose does attacking the coach before the season serve?  What do you gain by doing that?

I can't support Marshall football under the leadership of Charles Huff. Personal reasons.
