  • Just saw that Henry died at 71. He was part of the coaching staff for Huck's Herd. A class act. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

  • My apologies. I have no idea what happened with the title here and it won't let me change it. Obviously was referring to Henry Dickerson.

It's the board's version of Carlin's seven words you can't say on TV.  There are certain words the Nannybots won't let you post, either alone or as part of a larger word. And you typed one of those four letter words.  It's rather silly for a number of reasons. One of which is there are numerous ways around it.  For example some people would have typed  D I C Kersom.  My preferred method is D!ckerson.

Out of curiosity I couldn't help looking at your post count prior to responding.  With over a thousand posts I'm surprised you haven't encountered it before either in you own posts or seeing it in other people's posts.

  • I tried to post the same thing a few days ago.  Changes his last name due to some auto correct thing I suppose.  I thought Henry was a class act as well.  Remember him from those days.  Prayers to his family!

  • I think when things happened here with Huck that Henry went to UTC and worked for Mack McCarthy, then was the head coach there for a while.

He did. And I think he had a couple of big wins in the NCAA tournament.

There wasn't an eer part until after it was censored.

A Beckley basketball legend has passed away.

Henry Dickerson, the first Woodrow Wilson High School alumnus to play in the National Basketball Association, died Thursday at 71.

A 1969 graduate of WWHS, Dickerson enjoyed a decorated career at Morris Harvey College, now known as the University of Charleston. Dickerson was the only player in the history of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to be chosen all-conference and all-tournament all four seasons.

A third-team NAIA All-American in 1973, Dickerson averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds for his college career before going undrafted in 1973.

However, Dickerson later earned a spot on the Detroit Pistons in the 1975-76 season, before a short stint with the Atlanta Hawks the following season.

After his playing career, Dickerson got into coaching and first served as an assistant at Charleston from 1979-83. He moved on to Marshall and was a Herd assistant coach from 1983-89, before becoming associate head coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, a title Di ckerson held from 1989-97.

Henry Dickerson talks to a player during his career as head coach at Chattanooga.
In Dickerson?s final season as associate head coach, the Mocs defeated Georgia and Illinois in consecutive NCAA Tournament games for their only Sweet 16 appearance in school history.

Ahead of the 1997-98 season, Dickerson became the first black head in Chattanooga men?s basketball history. He held that position for five years, during which time the Mocs had a 72-73 record and won Southern Conference South Division Championships in 1998 and 2002.

Dickerson later became the head coach at North Carolina Central from 2004-09. He wrapped up his coaching career by with a two-season stint at Johnston Community College in North Carolina.

Dickerson is a member of the Beckley Basketball Hall of Fame and Morris Harvey/Charleston Sports Hall of Fame. UC retired his No. 34 jersey in 2017.
