Defense will need to play dramatically better.  Amazing the difference when you lose a good coordinator.   I like a comment someone made about letting Porter make some defensive calls.

It's a different week. Stop the knee jerk reactions. It was panic after Albany. Defense is great but offense sucks. Fancher can't play. Now it's defense sucks. Let's wait and see what happens first.

The Wolfpack have shown NOTHING in their games to date to indicate that they are anything more than a very AVERAGE to Mediocre team, IMO!!

They havent scored more than 24 in their 4 games against FBS opponents. Watching their game against UofL the defense looks solid. I could see a 17-13 type game.

As far as the defense, ODO obviously spotted something and exploited it. They had 280 yards on 4 plays, but only 153 yards on the other 50 plays. Hopefully the coaches figure out what the issue was.

I heard Coach Huff mention that they anticipated more of a passing game from Old Dominion on Saturday. I took that to mean they spent too much time preparing for a different kind of offense than they actually faced.

NC State can run better than they can pass. If they have coaches worth a damn, they'll run it 80% of the time against us. And we better prepare for it.

But it should be a low scoring affair, i agree.

Look at their stats. The are not a running team. Only one 200+ yard game was against VMI.

They are rushing for an average of 151 a game. And 69 in the country. Not astounding, but better than their passing game which is 94th.

By comparison, ODU was averaging 107 total yards and a bottom 15 rushing team before they played us. Our defense is much better against the pass than the run so I hope they come in trying to throw it

And both Gibson & Leggs are difference makers. In tandem they do a very good job of gumming up the A & B gaps.

I've heard this mentioned before, and I've been trying to figure it out. Because according to our official roster on herdzone.com, even without Gibson, we have 7 D-linemen who are over 300 pounds. This includes several new Power 5 transfers (2 from Arizona State, and one from Florida). We have one guy that is listed at 399 pounds! If these guys are on the team, I don't understand why we have an issue, and why we have Porter playing at defensive end instead of linebacker.

I think Saturday was more of a scheme mismatch than Marshall's run D being awful all year. The Run D has been pretty good all year besides giving up some long QB runs which we saw again vs ODU.

ODU's offensive scheme was to spread us out as wide as possible and create mismatches in the box whether that be 5 v 5 or 5v 6 and at that point its RB on LB and may the best man win. Like Huff stated in his presser, you still have to tackle the ball. I expect the run D to be better, but would also expect other teams to take note of what ODU did that worked.

It will be interesting to see how we do with the upcoming schedule.  We are facing teams ranked a lot higher in several categories than the teams we have faced.  Our saving grace may be that some teams have performed below expectations such as USA and Coastal. 

The rest of the schedule is going to be a test for Huff and team.  Maybe it was the comeback vs ODU, but i feel like we have been holding something back.

Having said that, preseason I predicted our defense would fall off from last season, but still be in the top 25.  Currently, we rank 43 in total defense.
