  • what i know is that every football team has their strengths and weaknesses that are subject to change week to week.

this week was an ODU that has a great run game, meaning unit-efficient from snap to whistle.

one consistent for us is what Huff preaches- we play for 60 minutes and so far, it may be one of the better teams ever to do so.

once again Herd fans are awesome.

these teams have a slight advantage of having one more game under their belt but that will even out in a couple weeks.  on the other hand, we'll get no real healing time mid-season.  both Ali and Fancher limping and others too- this could become a factor sooner that later.

  • Outside of the QB long run where we sold out.

ODU looked at the tape and realizes our defense looks at the side lines for what plays and adjustments are needed for every snap. So ODU after first down or picking up a good chunk on first down, would hurry up to the line and snap the ball before our line and linebackers were set and still looking at the side lines (heck most of the time our DL were still standing up while the ball was being snapped). This lead to being out of position, poor angles and bad tackling on runs.
I watch the game again, and you are exactly correct.  We have got to have our coach on the field Owen Porter call the "D" Plays if they go hurry up.  I would bet we would be happy with his sets and stunts if he had that privilege.  Coaches could have an overriding call if they could get the call in super quickly.  After looking at the game again, our run "D" wasn't that bad it was just blown assignments in hurry up.  Other than the big plays we did pretty good against the run.  Their RB was fast.  Only Abraham had the speed to run him down.

Lastly, we could have gotten beat deep several times.  This does concern me more.  NC State is better equipped to hit the deep ball.  Either we have to send blitzes to limit the time a qb has in the pocket, or you DB's have to tighten up coverage on the deep ball.

  • I have a hypothesis about why we did not drastically change the defense; we felt that we could do better than we did, but could not take a chance on they lighting us up with the passing game. Their receivers were 4 to 6 inches taller than our defenders, Huff talked about that this week.

They spread us out, very well coached team. I think Ricky Hahne will do well in his career, his teams are always well prepared.

Some may remember I stated that ODU had players, just not enough.  He's gotten some late-arriving kids ready now, and they have a bit more stamina on Offense, glad it hasn't gotten that way with their defense yet; or we would certainly have not gotten the W.

Don't be surprised to see us rooting for them several more times this year, now that we've beaten them.  However, I'm betting the other head and defensive coordinators prepare to keep from moving their dline outside the center gaps, and their linebackers from moving completely out of the center of the field.  Also, expect others to play a lot more zone with their dbacks so that they're not so close to the line of scrimmage.

  • For those who are concerned about the size of yesterday's crowd, keep this in mind:

    ODU fans travel "WELL"!!!!!

  • "Ohio drew 30+k" When did this happen? OU had 21,191 (capicity of 24K) for their home game with Iowa State on Sept 16. There other two home games had less than 18,500. FYI the OU message board said that ISU brought a lot of fans to the game.

  • Both Cabell-Midland and Spring Valley had Homecoming's this weekend so that contributed to a smaller crowd.

I think the crowd was bigger than the announced attendance. I was there and I would have guessed closer to 25K
