  • WSAZ Highlights. I didn't have a chance to watch it, but it appears there weren't many pounties in the stands? We need to think about expanding the stadium in stages. Maybe Jim will contribute to the expansion. wink

Careful.  He might want to have soccer at the Greenbrier.

  • Great crowd. Great match. I thought 2nd half was best half we played all year.  We easily could have had 3-4 2nd half goals and WVU was very limited.

On WVU goals, Perotta didn't see first until it was too late. On 2nd one, he really didn't have a chance to come up and play it. He would have never got there imo. Positionally he probably should have stepped forward a step to cut the angle and maybe a half step to post as he had Goddard on inside but both their shots were very good shots.

I know Aoumaich has had a good year, but to me today's lineup was the best. Silva is taller, faster, and more versatile even though he is on other side. Garcia was a beast vs UK and today.

    TV guys were great.

Both MU and WVU can go far imo because they both have multiple scoring threats.

  • At the risk of putting some of my hopefully well-earned soccer street creed on the line, MicDrass is actually right.  If we are going to lose a game in the NCAA Tournament this year, it will be in penalty kicks, and Perotta appears to be weaker in that regard than Semmle (who beat a #1 and a #4 in penalties during his tenure in the NCAA's).  If I have to do a national championship threat assessment, I do think GK is our weakest link (assuming Duggan is relatively healthy).

Hopefully, it doesn't ever come to penalties and we just win games outright like we have done all year.

  • Let's see. I think we can all agree that the SBC is the best soccer conference in the nation. Perrotta just won the keeper of the year award for said conference. How'd he do it? Well, he led the league in shutouts, goals against (least), goals against average, and probably the most important stat for a keeper - since it's based almost entirely on individual performance - save percentage. All this while playing on a team that requires him to play out from the back, a style that increases the chance that other teams get one-on-one opportunities on goal. Given the numbers, I'd say all these posts about Perrotta being a "weak link" are BS from posters that have no clue what they're talking about. Probably never watched a soccer match of any kind before Marshall won the Natty.

  • Due to low trajectory his best shot at save on goal 2 was probably with his foot. We haven't seen him in a PK situation so we have no idea how he would do. Someone would have to go look at his UNCW career to really get an idea and I doubt anyone has done that.  Comparing to Semmle is not a good comparison. We know he was great and has more length than Perotta. But he has made some really big saves this year and I can only think of 2-3 where he had any chance at all. I'll take my chances with him. He is a big reason we are where we are and a big reason we don't have any draws this year. Like hockey, the defense in front of them is a big factor in the goalie results.

There are plenty of teams capable of beating us but we are also capable of beating anyone and I've probably seen every team in the tourney play at least once and many multiple times.

We have no idea how he will perform on PK's. He's made some solid saves all year. Yeah, he isn't Semmle but he's solid. If our D doesn't turn it over in the back with sloppy passes, we should be OK.

  • He?s a good GK.  I only watched a few games this year but both against wvu.  Is he better than MU HoF GK - Mr. Taly Goode??  I can?t wait to be at the NCAA Champ again.  Go Herd!

  • With the lightning reflexes Perrotta has displayed this year ( "miracle" saves ) ... yes, it was a shock to see him, shall I say, appear "statuesque".

First one, yeah screened off and didn't see it developing. Second goal I agree with 88 ... maybe a half-step toward the post. Situation like that a GK might want to over-commit to the short side. But, bang-bang ... and by staying closer to the middle he has more overall chance to cover territory.

Gotta like our chances with Perrotta. I mean, 10.5 clean sheets ... easily could have 11 in our 19 games so far.

  • A couple of points:
On both goals it looked to me that the defenders didn't do a great job of marking

There's more to being a great GK than the number and percentage of SOG saved.

  • Our GK is a liability

You mean the keeper that's first team all-conference in the best or second best conference in college soccer?  The keeper that's been a FIVE time all conference selection (perhaps first ever)?  You mean the keeper that has allowed .75 goals per match?  Less than 1/2 a goal per match if you take out the weird night in Morgantown?

    I worry about your sanity.

  • - Perotta never had a PK OT situation at UNCW. Not sure about PKs during regulation
    - At UNCW they were offensively challenged most of his time there. His SR year he led league with 67 saves, including 9 in the conf postseason tourney. As a JR he had 14 saves in a tie at Univ of Va.
    - SBC RPI finished third. ACC was first and they will likely have 8 NCAA teams. Second was PAC12 but they only have 6 members and play a round robbin (play everyone twice via home/home) with no postseason tourney.

  • Did our two guys that have been hurt play? Or did we get the win while resting them?

Both played in the UK and WVU matches. Both played extremely well. AGP earned tournament MVP.

It's not too late to start. I hadn't watched very much, but I want to support Marshall as much as possible. Having the best team in the nation helps!
