  • No other basketball coach in our recent history has been held to this standard.

Let's take a look at some history of MU basketball coaches who were fired and their winning percentages from 1972 to the present.
    Bob Zuffelato .634 fired.
    Rick Huckabay .686 fired
    Dwight Freeman .414 fired
    Greg White .578 fired
    Ron Jirsa .368 fired.
    Tom Herrion .500 fired.
The three other coaches in the above time period left for other jobs. In addition, we fired an earlier coach, Bob Daniels, who had .534 winning percentage.

Dan is currently at .555 if Wiki is correct and I wouldn't be surprised to see the % dropping by the end of this season. In three cases we fired coaches who had better records than Dan. The only thing different is Dan did win a NCAA tournament game SIX years ago. In reality, Dan is being held to a lower standard and we know why. It appears that Dan had caught lightening in the bottle once and his record is fairly poor except for another year. Two good years out of 10 would not be tolerated at most schools.

  • Two things can be true at the same time.

    1. I think DD would have been a great coach for us had we hired him around the time we hired Jirsa. His philosophy and style would have been much better suited for that time period.

    2. He should retire or be fired after this season as the game has completely passed him by.

would never have worked.  DD finished his HS career in 2005, we hired Jirsa in 2003.  DD joined Mike in PHX in 2005.  DD has said he learned much more about game and the system after joining Mike and doing pro basketball 100% of the time.  Prior to that he said he was raising kids, family, teaching and spent his time as a HS coach having team bring the ball down the floor and pound it into the post for a low percentage shot.  His words.

  • No other basketball coach in our recent history has been held to this standard.  Why DD?  Because he's the ONLY one to ever do it here!  A lot of things get repeated on here without any backing. "never playing a difficult out of conference schedule", "all the guys that are 23 and 24 that don't see the floor for us", etc.  We have 1 player that fits that last statement and it is Marko. 1 player. Dan is never going to be enough for the agenda driven folks. There were people complaining immediately after the NCAA season. People complaining about the soccer team after losing in the round of 16, people complaining about Doc, about Huff, etc, etc.  The grass isn't always greener and some of you have completely forgotten how to enjoy Marshall athletics.

You are a real hoot!!! Just think about what you posted? Why should Dan be held to a higher standard? So you are saying if we sucked in the past it should be ok for Dan to suck now? lol!!! Well enjoy if that is your standard. But I hope it gets to the point there aren't 500 people in the stands. If the administration and a few of our fans have this outlook then enjoy it.

  • clearly DD is going to do it his way come hell or high water.  it doesn't really matter what fans think.  it's what expectations are or aren't met in the eyes or the AD on the current contract (if i'm correct, 2 more full seasons after this one).  i hope the AD/President/Other will honestly evaluate the program after each and every season.

i hope DD turns it around, but what i was hoping for 10 years ago was to finally see a program incrementally improve, but more importantly, sustain that growth no matter who the coach was.  while it improved on occasion, it never held new ground it had claimed.

i still look forward to every game

  • I just have two questions for those that defend Dan and say that this program is as good as it is going to get.

A few years ago supporters of men's basketball were asked to up their donations for a stronger recruiting budget, charter flights to conference games, better hotels on travel stays, etc. People came up with money and donated more than they had in the past.

My question is this........if we do such things, then shouldn't we expect more than the same old excuses we got during the 2021-22 season and that are currently being recycled this season? Why are we being asked to contribute more, but the bar stays level or slightly below?

  • Anyone else bothered by the fact that DD threw all his assistants under the bus, except Corney who will supposedly be handling the scouting duties?  When was the last time you saw him consult with any of them during his rare timeouts, like most successful coaches do?  I bet they are really fired up to get to practice after that!

I encourage you to go to youtube and pull up any college basketball coaches post game interviews of your choice, compare them to this one, and be able to convince anyone that DD is not an embarrassment to Marshall University.

I know Adam Williams. You won't find a better gentleman. I wouldn't blame him one bit for pulling up stakes after this season. The guy played under both Tubby Smith and Donnie Jones. He coached under Donnie. He coached under an excellent NAIA coach in Bob Williams. He was head coach of Salem and did wonders there which is almost mission impossible.

You would think Dan would consult him during games considering he has learned some basketball under some good names including his father who was a good head coach himself at both the high school and college level.

No matter how anyone twists it, that was very unprofessional out of Dan. Keep it to yourself and do more in practice. But as always he makes it sound as if he needs to do more because that is why we are bad. He never takes responsibility and always blames someone else or at least tries to divert everything away from him. He is just digging a deeper hole with everything he is doing. I would be pissed if I were one of the assistants.

  • I guess, just like the issue with Huff and Fancher, folks will see this differently.  I thought he was trying to say he'd made a mistake himself by disengaging from the practices, and that by doing so, he didn't see the lack of development and understand how poorly things were in execution.  I'd say that his disappointment with the coaches is probably two-fold, the results and not being informed honestly about what the results really were.

I'm not defending him, or happy with where his program is, but he did step up and take the blame; let's see if he corrects it.

Also found it odd that he'd bring Kycen along to the presser, his first playing time, having been pointed out as beaten on the court defensively, etc.

Hoping, but not expecting, different approach and effort from the team tonight.

Danny knows everything that is going on. He is at every practice and sees what is going on. Now that they are 2-5 he is grasping for answers so he basically telling the fanbase he should have been more involved and don't think his coaches are doing a good enough job. He should have kept it private but he wants to deflect blame without in a round about way. No reason to say it and just could have done it.

I saw Toussaint in street clothes on TV for the little Miami game, is he still on the team?  Didn't seem him at Ohio today either.

  • Not using the portal is like standing on the railroad tracks and hoping the train misses you. I don?t like it but it is as important as recruiting.
