  • CNBC is reporting that ESPN, Fox sports, Warner Paramount, and maybe others have agreed to a massive sports streaming network where all three sports programs will be shared in one streaming service.   CBS and NBC aren't included.

That's a pretty big deal. It will be interesting to see how it does and how much it costs.

  • i'm down to a very few paid services now.  i'd say i'm a bit of a minimalist

    cable internet (must have) $83
    ESPN+ (must have) $13
Netfilx (could do without but wife likes it) $19

besides sports, i'm happy with how many free, legit, sometimes limited, streaming sites there are for movies & tv.

I'd recommend MAX.  And I have Amazon for the free shipping but includes a LOT of entertainment.  But MAX has HBO, Cinemax, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, Discovery, Home and Garden channels, Cooking shows, etc.  So much more, I can't remember.  I think it's $15 a month, but basically has everything linear TV did that guys find interesting with no commercials and watch when you want to.

MAX is HBO's comprehensive streaming service.  You either need a smart TV or you'll have to connect a broadcasting device (laptop, Phone) to your TV.

With a smart TV you download the app on your TV, create an account, buy the service and sign in on the App on your TV and you're in business.

The other way, just do the same thing but on a laptop, tablet or phone and connect that device to your TV either wired or wirelessly.

I bought Max with a promo that it cost me a one time fee of $89 for 12 months of service.  I could have bought commercial free for 139 for a year.   Now i think it's 99 with commercials and 149 without, but they only show 2, 45 second commercials every 2 hours.

thanks, i wasn't aware of it because i'm always a behind times except when it comes to MU sports.  i might give that a try, especially if i nix netflix.  seems reasonable, like ESPN+ is or to some people, Netflix.  we have a simple indoor antenna for local tv and whatever Roku-like stuff we get with smart tvs

  • So, how do you watch ESPN, ESPN Plus & local channels?

ESPN+ is a different App.  Max isn't for watching local channels or live TV.  It's just a streaming library where you pick a show and watch it.  If you have a firestick or smart tv, you would just have an app for each service you subscribe to.  Local channels are easily gotten through a $10 antenna and there's like 30+ channels of content here locally with the antenna.  You just change the source on the TV to access it.

ESPN linear family of channels are the problem.  They are currently only available with live TV services and not as part of a stand alone app.  So you have to get packages that include them, but also have a bunch of junk you pay for but never watch.  Services that include ESPN channels and usually not all of them without an upcharge, like ESPNU, are much more expensive because of the bundled channels you don't want.  Best solution is just sign up for free trials for certain games and then remember to cancel or find a local watering hole with linear TV and just resolve to go there for the few games a year that you can't otherwise get.

AT&T unlimited phone service gets you MAX for free.

  • So, how do you watch ESPN, ESPN Plus & local channels?

Go to Lowes and buy an OTA Antenna to watch local channels for free. Get SlingTV at $40 per month for ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN3 included. Every game on ABC is simulcast on ESPN3. Subscribe to ESPN+ separately at $10 per month.

Not anymore.  They canceled that poiicy but I think those that were grandfathered in still have it, for now.  I used to get it with Directv, also, which is ATT or was, who the hell knows anymore.

OTA doesn't work for everyone, but many who do have that option aren't aware that OTA would even be available...

Sling's up to $45 and plan that includes ESPN is only available for one stream at a time...but that's all someone may need.

You might be able to negotiate your cable price.
Unless you're a gamer, you don't need more than 50 mbps of speed.
When I threaten to quit xFinity to go with another service, they dropped my price down to $30 per month for 2 years for 200 mbps.
