  • The kid's reason for transferring now sums up the mess created.  As I said in another thread, IMO, the portal should not open until the end of the Spring semester.  Treat transfers as incoming Freshmen.  https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/42994761/penn-state-backup-qb-pribula-skipping-cfp-entering-portal

  • A number of people around here need to read this.  What if Penn St's starter is injured?  This is no one and done bowl.  It's a playoff game with a national title on the line.  One may think PSU had no chance anyway, but what are there chances with an integral part of their offense and depth gone.  Certainly lower then they were and nil if their starter gets hurt.

This story, coupled with our story, may be enough to get some portal reform going.  All fans are asking is to stop the interference with the full season for players and coaches.  Season ends with the last game played and the playoffs give us that date by default.  I like Banker's idea best.  Portal for each sport opens for a month after the last game has been played nationally in that sport.  And the players go to their next school the next available semester or quarter.   Football got along for 100 years without new players having to be there for spring practice.   And basketball has most of the entire fall to prepare players for the upcoming season.

  • so SMU QB sticks with team, PSU QB doesn't

i don't get it -- how is NONE of the blame for these guys leaving the team on them?  obviously, you CAN choose to finish the season with your team, that is an option.

  • It is an option, but there are likely multiple reasons for people to stay or leave that are different for each athlete.  Some might stay because they received zero interest from other teams.  Others will be influenced by NIL deals.  Ultimately, limiting the portal to the end of the semester (mid-May in most cases) through say, August 1st?  Mid-July?  That's plenty of time to gauge interest, make some visits, have meaningful conversations, and the current and prospective school can make plans.  The summer only will work for most sports save for those that stretch into the summer like baseball, softball, and track & field.  We'll need some alternatives in those cases.

  • Most of the kids transferring want to start the spring semester. If they wait until summer, they miss spring practice and that is valuable

i'm sure they do WANT TO, but in life...you don't always get what you want

decisions (apparently choosing the wrong school to attend in the fall) have consequences

Didn't we have some players that transferred in for Spring ball then transfer out before fall? It seemed like the only reason was to get some kind of film to send around.

We had at least one player who transferred in January for the spring semester and left after spring practice this year at the end of the semester, maybe two.

  • NCAA should adjust ?payout? schedule of NIL funds, IMO.  If a player gets $$ funds, then it should be paid out on a per games played basis, again IMO.  For almost all non power 4 schools like MU that will almost always mean a potential 14 game season, 12 regular season games, a conference championship game, and a bowl game. Want to forego any post season play for current team and enter the portal?  Then be willing to forfeit any ?payment ? due for 2 potential post season games that you don?t play in.  If NIL agreement is a ?contract?, then BOTH sides, players and schools alike have obligations to fulfill!

  • We lose three QBs to the portal, no big deal.

    A P4 school loses their backup--outrage!

  • obviously, you CAN choose to finish the season with your team, that is an option.

Problem is the portal closes before all the teams are through playing.  That's the whole point.  It opens and closes before teams are done playing, so if a player want to leave he has to make that decision against the best interest of his team.  System is broke and needs fixed.  Whistling a different tune if a couple soccer starters wanted to transfer out but had to do it before the NCAA tournament because of the window.  I would rather it be mandatory to miss spring by moving portal to after the season than have it possible to miss part of the current season to preserve spring at the new school.  This would also fix the coaching problem because coaches wouldn't have to be there first week of December to avoid falling behind on recruiting the portal.  They could finish bowl or playoffs and then move over the following week, rather  than the following day after the last season game.
