  • Who are you speaking of? Spears? Smith?

We just won a Sun Belt title in football and made the national championship game in soccer

Yes, things are quite dark with Marshall athletics 😂😂😂

Basically everything that's transpiring, Spears, the coaching issues, Smith, Lack of communication with Herd Nation, and the back room dealings that's going on right now. I don't remember ever having this happening in the past

  • Just because someone disagrees with you. Does not make it negative.

    It's either:

    WVU or Marshall
    For us or Against us
    Huff or Gibson

Why is everything so back and white with you people back there?

  • How any Marshall fan can be a beacon of positivity and not ashamed, embarrassed, disgusted, and nearly over it...during one of (and likely) THE biggest botches and fumbles of multiple situations in a 3 weeks span in Marshall Athletics history is beyond me. Spears will go down as the worst AD in our lifetime.

After growing up on campus, befriending numerous Marshall players as a kid, hanging out in their dorms, living in the Cam Henderson Center (walking the halls daily for years), having season tickets, and scheduling my life around Marshall sports while being a hard core fan for 40 years I would say I'm officially done, no longer a fan, and am just posting the last few times to vent.

I feel bad for all of us. I know there's another few thousand just like me who can't take it anymore. Following this poorly run program, run by imbeciles, has been such a massive waste of time and energy.

**Looks like this is my 3000th post. Crazy. I think I'm going to stop right here. Wish y'all the best.***

We see what happened and know how screwed up this was. Cost is a great bowl game, national recognition after beating Army and yes we would have, and an even better season next year. You keep this team mainly intact and let Huff out another recruiting class together and we could have had a monster year. Instead smith and spears got their feelings hurt and walked away from all that. Then you have the same zombies on this board that just go with whatever they say and pretend all is well. No matter what recruit committed we hear great get!!! No matter what coach they hire, great coach!!! Heck we aren't the miserable ones they are. I'm eagerly waiting to watch this play out myself. I think it's going to speak for itself.

  • This is why my interest has pretty much switched to men's soccer. The other stuff is just frustrating noise. The football program will take years to recover and basketball is a joke.

Well said IMO. There never has and never will be one person above the University. Coaches and players will come and go.

How hard is it for you to understand that Huff DID NOT WANT TO BE HERE? Seriously?

The administration gave him what he wanted and let him walk. I'm totally good with that. I wasnt until the very end when Huff realized he was gonna have to take over a rebuilding project at Southern Miss did he show any interest in staying. Wake up!!!

Its over. Its done. Time to move on and support the current staff if you truly love and support the University.

If you prefer to follow one man, Im sure there are plenty of Southern Miss boards you can sign up and post about your love for Huff and maybe even donate to their program. Im sure they would love you posting over there.

  • There is a useful function on this Board where you can go to a user and hit view all posts.  If you do that and 95%+ of the persons posts are negative across all range of topics from recruiting to whatever else, pretty safe assumption you are negative and a pessimist by nature. Most fans have periods of frustration, I certainly have.  But to go spew negativity on every post is ridiculous.
I don't like to lose, and that isn't so much because it is just a football game, but because defeat means the failure to reach your objective. I don't want a football player who doesn't take defeat to heart, who laughs it off with the thought, 'Oh, well, there's another Saturday.' The trouble in American life today, in business as well as in sports, is that too many people are afraid of competition. The result is that in some circles people have come to sneer at success if it costs hard work and training and sacrifice.- Knute Rockne

Maybe but sounds like our AD gave him the match to light it.  Last offer ext in 22, pay new unproven coach more, public comments about performance, etc

I don't fault Huff at all. He's working for So Miss now and he's no more a turn coat than Gibby is to NC St. Obviously he didn't have the leverage he thought and our administration walked away.  Hell and our fans will hate on huff and defend administration right on cue.

Personally, I hope he does well at so Miss. earlier this year many of us said a good so Miss is good for the league.  He can do well there while Gibby does well here.  Why care if he succeeds there unless we are butthurt ....

  • What is a negative poster? Who knows? Should I be like Perkins? Just asking.

Our new coach has a tremendous deal. He should have no complaints. It is time to get to work. He obviously has SUPPORT. He has resources for a coaching staff. He has more money committed for the program. And he has an extremely long-term deal.

Do I expect a rough first year? Yes. I give him the benefit of the doubt. But this is not 1995. The era is different. This isn't the era that Dan D'Antoni wanted. It is an era of reality. The transfer portal has been here quite some time. It is a big reason we won a football championship. He will have to work it well to win at Marshall. Will we need freshmen? Yes, but in all reality, we will always have to now have a head coach that knows how to work the portal. It is simple as that.

Like I said, he gets some benefit of the doubt. But if he can't win by year three, then we have a serious problem on our hand with a guy we paid well and gave a long-term deal to.

If making those comments makes me a negative poster, then so be it. I won't apologize for asking for reasonable results in a given amount of time. And know, I don't think that makes me a "bad fan" if I give support, if I purchase tickets and I do my part to the best of my ability. I expect a return.

This is a realistic view point post with actual thought.  This is not a negative post.   It?s obvious who are the negative posters.

Why by year 3? People keep forgetting that you don't build teams anymore. Every year is basically a reset. He has just as good of a chance to get it done this year as year 3. The portal is a different world and there should be no honeymoon period because every year you are putting a new team together. He has more money than anyone in Marshall history and more NIL to get it done. No excuses just get to work and win. Nothing against the guy but he needs to win immediately.

  • I don?t think anyone thinks that respectful debate is negative or that people that agree to disagree or simply disagree is any sort of problem, just try be respectful or don?t.

It?s kind of ridiculous that we get so worked up over 19 year olds playing a game.

I was pretty upset over how everything recently went down, with the coaching change, players deserting and bowl game cancellation.  I thought things were handled emotionally and against the best the best interests of the school.

The real truth is it doesn?t matter what any of us think, whats done is done.

It?s definitely dawned on me that sports are emotional.  If you don?t think so, look at some of these schools that get so mad at the coach they fire them and pay them 5-30 million dollars!

People actually write checks for millions of dollars to schools to fire the coach, out of emotion.   it certainly doesn?t make sense to spend multi millions of your money and get nothing, but rid of a coach.   At one point, there was a 100 million dollars owed in dead money to coaches across college football.

Finally, if I have been rude to or offended any member on here, ever.

    I sincerely apologize.

  • So the players are mindless zombies that can't make their own decisions? Who cares what he said. Do you do everything someone tells you? If a boss on the way out told you to quit would you just say ok and do it? These players have their own brains and are responsible for their own decisions. If masses of them are leaving...they feel they have a reason to.

Yes, because their coach sold them a bill of goods that they believed.  20 yr old athletes, whose father is their coach, don't have brains.  They are going to do what is asked of them, without question.  And they're going to do it while they are still hot from a championship and feel they have value they can capitalize on.  Thanks for making my point for me with the worst argument I've seen listed in a long time.

It only works if you let them.  Marshall is still here.  We cut out the cancer.  We've moved on.  Always some that can't let go.  There are still people that don't like anyone we hire because they aren't Doc.  A lot depends on the era they became fans or personal contacts etc.  If Marshall hadn't done what it did it would have just been postponing the same outcome.  There's no way it worked out any better unless someone bigger and better hired Huff away.  Were we supposed to keep him until that happened?  Imagine his power trip a few years later if he'd had to do this after several championships and several more behind the back interviews with every school looking for a coach.  If one's loyalty is to the school, then coaches come and go and you deal with it.  If you're loyal to the coach then follow them to their next school and save everyone the headache.

  • So many talks of absolutes in here. Nobody on this board knows exactly what transpired in negotiations. Even if you have a friend who heard it from Spears or Smith, it's still secondhand info. Nobody knows if it will take a summer to rebuild or years to rebuild. Nobody knows if Huff would have repeated next year or dissapointed. Nobody knows if Gibby is the next BP or Snyder.

Do I wish Huff stayed and everyone was a happy family, yes. That didn't happen and I have zero control over it. I can't tell the future either. All I can really do is hope for the best.
