Herd glad to be getting kinder, gentler turf

    By Doug Smock
    Staff writer

The just-approved FieldTurf installation this summer at Marshall is welcomed by players and coaches alike.

Apparently, coaches won’t like it just because it may cut down on player injuries.

Am i reading this right?  is he saying that the coaches will not like a new surface that may cut down on player injuries?  is this a misprint or what?

  • Coaches won't like it JUST because....

I had to do a double take on that, as well...but he means they have more than that one reason to like it.

  • You're going to love it for multiple reasons.  Tulsa installed FieldTurf 3-4 years ago and it's wonderful stuff, as close to real grass as man can make it.

It gives you the speed of turf, it allows you to use a wide variety of footwear, it doesn't get as hot as turf and it looks like real grass.

I have not seen any drawbacks to this field in any way!

  • Terrible Writing. Who prints that crap?

Apparently, the new field turf cutting down on injuries is just one of several reasons the new coaches like it.

  • Is field turf the stuff with the ground up tires beneath it?

Several of us were chatting on this site a couple years ago while watching Toledo play at UNLV. The turf was brand new and every time someone stepped there was a little cloud of tire powder poofing up from the field.

My guess it is fine if it gets practiced on and it rains a time or two...but at first it's kinda strange.

I thought I read somewhere that said Field Turf used ground up old Nike shoes.

  • They use tires and stuff called "Nike Grind"  which is ground up shoe rubber.  People love it.  The stuff WVU has is the company that went out of business called Astroplay.  That company had all kinds of complaints with it tearing up and stuff.   Snyder said they had Field turf on the outdoor practice field at OSU and Astroplay on the indoor and he said the Field Turf is 10x better than Astroplay.  He said it didn't compare.

  • I am sure Vingle had something to do with it. Time to go play some Smack Mitch on Herd Rumors again.
