  • but I traveled for 8 years and over 2 million air miles.  Duing that time, I had two crash landings and a near miss.  I'm really surprised we do as well as we do in the skies.  Now that the aircraft are older, our odds are even greater that folks that travel will have an incident, imo.

    -  Flying into Nashville from Atlanta, we assumed crash posiitions as they foamed the runway.  An instrument light comfirming the front wheel was down and locked didn't come on.  Two flybys (at night) and the tower couldn't confirm the wheel was down.  It was.

    -  Flying into New Orleans from Charlotte, the plane desended into a notorious afternoon thunderstorm.  The plane was hit several times by lightning, the last hit taking out the cabin power.  Crash positions assumed, we landed safely.

    -  Flying into Philly from Pittsburgh, our 767 rear wheels touched the runway only to quickly pull back up into the sky.  As we climbed, another aircraft taxied underneath us on the same runway after landing in the opposite direction.

Blade, it would take only one such incident to ground me for life!

If the good Lord had intended us to fly, he wouldn't have invented roller skates!

Any intelligent person would agree with you, Lydia.  :D   Surprisingly, only the near miss frazzled me and that was after I saw the other jet rolling underneath us.

  • Wow!  Talk about a close call!

Must have been a WVU grad organizing the runway traffic.

I have this arguement with my wife, who is scared of flying, all the time.  I fly quite a bit.  My father has his private pilot's license.  I guarantee you that I've had more close calls in a car than I have a plane.  I'd bet that's the case for almost every american out there.  Do you consider not driving anymore after you nearly get in an accident?  I didn't think so.  Fact is, you have a much greater chance of getting killed in a car accident than in a plane accident.  Shoot, you have a better chance of getting killed as a pedestrian by an automobile than in a plane.  There are a few differences between a car accident and a plane accident.  First of all, car accidents are commonplace and plane accidents are rare.  Plane accidents are so rare, they become a national news story.  Secondly, there are normally very few people involved in an car accident.  Not so with a plane.  Finally, unlike a car accident, a plane accident normally kills most of it's passengers.  You never hear of an accident on the interstate involving 50 or more people.  It's happened, but not very often.

Anyway, that's my sermon on why folks who are scared to fly just need to go to the lounge before your flight and "loosen up"!
Chris Griffin: Dad, what's the blow-hole for?
Peter Griffin: I'll tell you what it's not for, son. And when I do, you'll understand why I can never go back to Sea World.

A buddy of mine is a private pilot.  I don't recall how many "crashes" he's had, but it's right at the average that a pilot is likely to experience.  His attitude now?

Wshew!  Glad I got those out of the way!
