By Gary FauberAssistant Sports EditorWith its 38-31 loss at Tulsa, Marshall’s season took a simple step Saturday. The Herd must win out not only to finish the year bowl eligible, but to also give themselves a shot at their first winning season since 2003. That would require an improbable bowl berth and a victory in that game.Of course, with the team sitting at 0-6 for the first time in 38 years and three of the best in Conference USA awaiting, all of that appears unlikely to happen. At least Marshall, 0-2 in C-USA, finally returns home for Sunday’s game against preseason conference favorite Southern Miss. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. with ESPN2 televising. The Herd had played three consecutive road games and have not played at Joan C. Edwards Stadium since getting upset by Division I-AA New Hampshire Sept. 15.“It will be nice to get back home,” sophomore defensive end John Jacobs said. “They (Southern Miss) are a good team and we have another challenge ahead of us. I think we can do it; I know we can. We can beat anyone we play that’s in our league and hopefully get a ‘W’ this week.”
