For one week at least, Marshall will get a reprieve from the spread offense.

Southern Miss (3-3, 2-1 Conference USA) will bring a more conventional attack to Joan C. Edwards Stadium for Sunday night’s game against the Thundering Herd (0-6, 0-2). Kickoff will be 8 p.m., with ESPN televising.

“We’re actually going to see a normal offense this week for the first time in a month, with formations that I can recognize,” Marshall coach Mark Snyder said Tuesday in his weekly press conference. “They do things the old-fashioned way. It’s easier to prepare for, but you still have to stop it.”

The Golden Eagles are averaging 354.8 total yards of offense. Leading the way is sophomore tailback Damion Fletcher, who is sixth in C-USA at 106.2 yards per game.

“He is really good,” Snyder said. “Running the ball is their centerpiece. ... Fletcher is a good back and he has a good offensive line in front of him. That’s what makes that engine go in the running game.”

Quarterback Stephen Reaves has completed 48 of 85 passes for 466 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also has tossed five interceptions, the bulk of them in an emergency role in a 31-29 loss to Rice.
