The mood surrounding Marshall University football reflects that of its head coach, good and not so much.

Last year's loss at SMU was especially disappointing, and an extended, emotionally charged message from Mark Snyder ensued. Moments later, similarly frustrated players grasped for answers during postgame interviews.

No one was patting backs following last week's 38-31 setback at Tulsa, but the vibe steered more toward encouragement than a defeatist attitude. Snyder set the tone, pointing to positives Saturday night and following up during Tuesday's press conference.

"As crazy as it sounds we got a little closer," Snyder said Tuesday. "We didn't turn the ball over. We didn't have silly penalties. We're finally rushing the quarterback and we're becoming active up front."

Marshall totaled two sacks and seven tackles for loss, more than doubling its per-game averages, in the 38-31 setback. Linemen John Jacobs and Shane Moore and linebacker Josh Johnson returned, adding depth and playmaking ability to the front seven.

"Now we have to go play the football on the back end," Snyder said, addressing his team's pass coverage. "That's my big thing this week. We have to go play the ball in the air."

  • I think the comments about Chubb, could pertain to most of the team. During the 11 days in between our last games. The team had 0 days off. They were tired. Last Monday, our typical day off we had practice. This Monday, 10/15, we had a day off. The first in quite a while. I said this before, even though we're losing. We need time to rest...and regroup. Chubb played well and Josh played pretty well, and they(even though injured) had some rest. If I asked my employees to work 11 days in a row. I couldn't compensate them with just OT. To get production from them I would have to give them some comp time. Some jobs are like that. D1 football I would think, falls in this category. JMO
