We're excited. We're playing a very good football team in Southern Miss. We're going head-to-head with the NFL, but it is on national television. We have a chance to represent our university against a very good football team. I feel like we match up fairly well with Southern Miss. I think Coach Bower has don a fantastic job. He's got a very good football team again this year. They've been steady ever since coach has been there. He's a guy that I've always looked up to as a football coach because of the success he's had. He wins with toughness, good defense and special teams so this should be very big challenge for us on Sunday.

On Southern Miss's different quarterbacks ... They're the same offense. Young can get out of trouble a little bit better than Reaves can. He can create things with his feet. That's not to say Reaves can't do that.

On Damien Fletcher and the USM offense ... He is really good. I think their tight end is really good. Running the ball is their centerpiece. They throw the ball to their nice tight end, and they have a couple of wide outs that they can get the ball to as well. Fletcher is a good back and he has a good offensive line in front of him. That's what makes that engine go in the running game. He is a good back. There is no question. The offensive line makes him a great back. He's get in behind those big bodies and then puts his foot in the ground and goes. He's a smart runner.

On facing a traditional offense ... We're actually going to see a normal offense this week for the first time in a month with formations that I can recognize. They do things the old fashioned way. It's easier to prepare for but you still have to stop it. They're very good at what they do. They're fundamentally sound. It should be a little easier on our corners because in those spread formations someone is going deep every time. Southern Miss runs more combination routes instead of go routes.

  • A little concerned that our head coach of NCAA Division I program doesn't recognize some offensive formations. I'm just nit-picking.

Coach Snyder said a similar thing at the QB Club Meeting - it was clear to me that he was being facetious about "not recognizing" the recent offenses.  Coach seemed excited about the opportunity to prepare / play against a "pro-style" offense for a change, rather than the variations on the spread option that we have faced since WVU.

Olen is right ... Trust me, his tounge was planted firmly in his cheek when he said this ... Some quotes don't translate well to print media.

He!!, taking comments out of context happens on here all of the time ... At least we can use the smiley face icons to help out a little.

A few things that should be explained to Snyder and the few remaining “Snyder my coach right or wrongers”

    1.   Fourth down and five, inside the ten with an off sides and you don’t get a new set of downs. Telling the press that was your plan doesn’t make you sound like you know what you’re doing
    2.   Throwing your players under the bus when you made as many or more mistakes in the same game doesn’t gain the confidence or respect of your fans or players
    3.   Publicly stating your team is poorly coached doesn’t gain the confidence or respect of your fans or players
    4.   Tongue in cheek comments deriding your own skills are cute when you’re winning and have the support of your fans. They’re pathetic and counter productive when you don’t have the confidence or respect of your fans or players
    5.   Most coaches in Snyder’s current position understand they are in a situation where it is essential to produce results. Snyder doesn’t seem to understand that having the job of head coach requires a greater comprehension of the game and the environment he exists in than Snyder appears to have.

Since Snyder doesn’t seem to be able to comprehend the reality of the situation, if he has any mentally competent supporters remaining they should sit down with him and explain the time has come that it would be best to shut up and put up. Right now; every time he opens his mouth he digs his hole a little deeper.

  • I don't think much about what coach says before the game, but I always seem to get a chuckle with something he says after the game.

  • I'm sure it's tongue in cheek, but an 0-6 coach has no business making tongue in cheek remarks like that.  A Field General has no business making tongue in cheek remarks like that.

It was a moment of levity with a retrospective point of view -- no different than posters that have stated or implied something akin to "This [Marshall football] is not a brand of football I recognize."

A moment of levity I can understand, but he made the virtually the same statement two days in a row.

See my previous post in this thread.

The question is no longer does this guy understand the current situation.

The questions are rapidly becoming :Is really as stupid as he seems? And, how does MU get out of this disaster?

That's not levity by any means or byany stretch of the imagination, that's just plain fact.

If one attends to the Tues. QB Club Meeting, one will get a "preview" of the press conference that happens at around 1pm that same afternoon.  Largely b/c the fans will ask or have the same general inquiries as the press.  No surprise.  Thus, the reason the statement is posted on a message board the day before the press goes to print, and then reappears the next day when the media gets the same statement(s).

What's not levity?  Snyder's statement or my characterization interpreting some of the posts concerning "not recognizing this brand of football"?

The insinuation that those who say they do not recognize this brand of football as Marshall football are doing so in jest.

That's not what I was stating.

The comparison was between the two statements usage of "recognize" -- the only statement I am suggesting was in jest is Snyder's statement.
