Assistant men's basketball coach Brett Nelson is glad to be home in the Mountain State.

"It's great to be back. I've received so much support from family and friends. Now that the season is underway, I don't have time to visit everyone," Nelson said.

Nelson joined the 2007 Marshall coaching staff with an impressive background. He set the state scoring record with 2,199 points in three seasons at St. Albans High School in St. Albans, W.Va.

During his senior year of 1999, Nelson averaged 31.9 points, 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds a game. He was named West Virginia Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American and also played in the 1999 Magic Johnson Roundball Classic.

Nelson was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Florida from 1999-2003, setting several school records.

While at UF Nelson played in four NCAA tournaments and finished his career with 1,417 points. In addition to receiving numerous national honors, Nelson also played internationally in Sweden and Germany.

"I've been through so much as a player, and it's easy for me to relate to the guys on our team," Nelson said. "I know what they're going through on a daily basis. I know how to coach each player because they're all different. It all correlates."
