Sounds eerily similar to the Herd in a lot of ways.Quote:Is there a better way to describe what most Kstater's are expecting out of this team this fall? I'm thinking no.There are so many questions still remaining on top of the talent we'll be putting out there that it is tough to tell where the strengths and weaknesses will pop up. Let's take a look...Position by position. Unit by Unit.QB: Will SOMEONE please step up and be a leader? Thanks. I like Meier's style. Reminds me of Matt Miller in so many ways...with the exception that Miller played hurt pretty much his whole career. We lacked a solid O-line in '95 and he paid the price. I'd take a backup like Brian Kavanaugh in times like these but our world changed after Bishop stepped on the scene. Wether it's Webb or Meier or Everdige, we need someone to grow up and take charge of the offense. I like Webb's mobility but he still has trouble keeping his head down when he scrambles. The ball HAS TO leave his hand on long 3rd down plays. Whichever QB gets the job done @ Marshall (if we do)....they'll be our QB when we travel to Norman.FB: We seem to always have a battering ram in the backfield to pave the way...and it looks as if Ayo Saba will continue that trend. He's got pretty good hands for a big guy and is quick to the outside. I think Saba could start for any Big XII offense and his senior year will easily be the best of his career. (but remember, He would have rode pine at Nebraska and Iowa...I remember reading that they day we signed him. lol)RB: Will the loss of Sproles help or hurt the offense? A little of both. We ran the Power-I HB Blast at least 60 times in our first three games with Sproles in the backfield and it cost us. We didn't have the offensive line capablities to ram it down defenses throats... Was that the kind of offensive formation that empasized his Darren's strenghts......uh, no. It didn't create any room, and we had yet to develop a running threat from the QB postion. Once Webb started running a bit on the option Sproles did his thing...but I think our new crop of backs can get along without so much help from the QB. With Thomas Clayton and Carlos Alsup I think we can run between the tackles and pick up good yardage. 3.5 to 5.5 yards a pop will keep defenses off-balance. This does go hand in hand with a strong offensive line....which leads us to....O-LINE: Young, talented, strong, but inexperienced...We'll know alot about this group after the trip to Marshall. I'm impressed with the size and mobility of this unit because we run several sweeps and bubble screens which heavily depend on a quick line. They must protect the QB and seal the edges on option plays. Jeromy Clary will probably get picked on by opposing defensive lines so the other guards need to be prepared to step up. This part of a football teams is SO underrated.WR: This is actually WR unit of envy by other teams in the conference...Moreira, Figurs, Dennis, Nelson... all good athletes with good hands. Nelson is all potential right now but he reminded me of Mitch Running in so many ways during the spring game. But we've got to call the right plays to get the football in their hands. I think this group is best served running shorter flags and buttonhook plays because they are so agile.....but the deep ball should be reserved for playaction. You look at WR's of the mold of James Terry, Darnell McDonald, Quincy Morgan, Kevin Lockett..etc...Those guys were deep threats because of their size more than their speed. I think the corp we have is more suited for shaking defenders after 10 or 12 yards and making the catch off of good timing. The QB's will be given plenty of help by these guys.D-LINE: I was surprised last year by how much these guys struggled. I was predicting we'd have one of the more solid D-lines in the conference. Ouch. Bulman wasn't the inside plug I had hoped..and Huntly was caught out of postion more often than not.....Scott Edmonds was/is a nice addition and this unit will need to get better at pass rushing if we want to climb back into the Top 25 in Total defense. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Ricky Miller might add. I thought they played well against the run overall with some breakdowns along the way but they could use some help from the linebackers....LINEBACKER: Anyone want to try out for linebacker? What was the problem last year...Injuries, injuries...and rookies playing in spots they shouldn't have been forced to play in. We missed Ted Sims dearly, and even when he returned he seemed a bit off balance. Brandon Archer is the clear leader heading into fall with Chad Lowe expected to step up as well. If Reggie Walker can play like he talks...then we have the next Mike Singletary slash Mike Ditka,..lol....CB: Struggled more than I had hoped last year as tackling was a big problem. Cedric Williams didn't have near the season he enjoyed in 2003 it seemed. Kyle Williams has good size 6 foot 1... and speed, one of the fastest on the team. Expect Kyle to be our go to secondary performer by midseason.... and he played well in the spring game. These guys could really use some help from the front seven in shortening the QB's dropback time.FS/SS: Off the bat, I'm not sure any KSU'er is thrilled with Tetuan. He seems to have hit a plateau but he's still a captain so it looks like Bobby Elliot sees something we don't. A good sign would be to see Marcus Watts get half of the playing time at the postiion and eventually take over....and expect that to happen if and when Tetuan gets burned trying to cover the deep man. Maurice Mack has two years of experience and Surrell Davis is offering up some good competition. We'll need the depth..the Big XII passes alot more than it used to. Oklahoma, Nebraska, TTech, KU, Iowa State all run 4-5 wide receiver sets...with Texas Tech BEING THE MOST ANNOYING of them all.PK/ST: I'll miss Joe Rheem. We took him for granted last year a bit..as teh guy was pretty automatic. His biggest "miss" was against KU but I don't think it was his fault the ball was blocked. Tim Schwert and Jeff Snodgrass will be plenty capable. Hopefully they are kicking extra points and fewer 45 yarders.KR/PR; Depth chart shows that Yamon Figurs is the man...but taht could change with one fumble... Actually, I don't really care what athlete returns kicks..as long as he can NOT TURN THE BALL OVER. Cost us huge turning points during the KU, CU, and A&M games..and both Sproles and Figurs were guilty of commiting them. We know Figurs has speed, but our return unit needs to work on creating walls for him to pick a direction.COACH: I still think Snyder is the man who should be leading our team, but I'm still waiting for Bobby Elliot to quit coaching our defense as if he never left Iowa State. Chris Cosh is an okay players coach, but he can only work with the talent he puts on teh field. If Reggie Walker doesn't pan out, and Chad Lowe, Matt Butler struggle....Cosh might be replaced...but optimistically, I'm thinking they'll improve slightly on 2004's numbers.I think we'll be better, but alot of work needs to be done to gain dominance again in the North. Cautiously optimistic...Go get'em Cats.
