  • Okay herdies the games are on.  I would like a serious prediction for the first three games.  Not smack talk, but serious debate and prognostication.

I believe WVU will win the first three.  Based on this reasoning:

    1. WVU is going to be very good in 06 and 07.
    2. MU will not be very good due to a new coach, new system, etc.  It takes time to implement that and growing pains are inevitable.  Since Snyder won't be putting his system in this year, 06 will be the first year of his system (whatever that is).
    3. I think 08 will be closer than the previous two, but home field wins out.

Of course all of this is based what is known now.  Major unforeseen events could influence the outcomes down stream somewhere.

    Any takers?

  • There was not much of a question there Z. It was an opinion, and statement. We'll, let's see MU is not as good, as you say, #1. MU, is rebuilding as you stated, and don't have the talent to stay with WVU,#2. MU, is just getting their legs as you put it by '08. i.e. with the installation of the new system,"as you put it" etc.. During this entire period WVU is going to be good, to very good, by your own admission. So, even though you really did not ask a question; Is there really any doubt who will win the first three games? Even though we are in our new mode of reaching out to one another, and I don't want to get off of the pathway, so hey, you guy's are going to be tough, and I mean that in all sincerity.

    Best Regards,

    Carolina

  • Z, your prognosis is as good as anyone's. As you so astutely pointed out we are down, and rebuilding. In addition to this we are in the process of trying to install a new system with a staff that hardly know's all of the players names. It is pot luck at this point. What really longtime Herd fans like myself believe is pretty much what I have stated. Now if you talk with some on campus students you may get the usual banter that is part beer, part bull %^&*, part pride, and part I don't have a clue, all balled into a big balled answer that really has nothing to back it up. That is why we are scheduling the games to see if our program has grown enough to be competitive with a historically good program, such as WVU's.

Good Luck to you guys this years,

    Carolina

  • honest prediction here................

2006 WVU and Marshall play a tough close game in Morgantown with WVU pulling out a real close one by a field goal.

2007 WVU and MU play a hard nose tough game again with MU winning a close one .........by a field goal.

2008 With the stakes high, national tv picks up the game as the winner of this WVU/MU game earns the 2009 home game.
MU will be experienced and primed for a big run.
WVU will be stronger than ever.
Another hard fought battle, but this time, the road team(MU) wins a close one.

After the first three games are played, WEST VIRGINIA realizes the importance of the game to be played and talks resume to continue the series beyond 2012 on a yearly home and home basis. Once again, the GOV is the negotiator.
2009 In their newly expanded stadium, MU blows a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter and loses a heartbreaker to WVU. Many HERD fans will immediately cry foul and conspiracy for HERD to lose this game on purpose as to ensure WVU signs an extended contract to continue the series.
2010 in the offseason prior, GOV Manchin announces a newly signed deal continuing the series for another 10 years through 2022. This time the deal is a home and home series. WVU@MU is the first blow out. MU wins in big fashion by 20. Record setting crowd for MU as 57k fans standing room only, show up to witness the event.
2011 the second blow out in the series. WVU pays back MU by beating the HERD by 21.
2012 back to being a close hard fought contest with WVU pulling out another feild goal win.

WVU wins 4 games. MU wins 3 games.
A rivalry that rivals all rivalries.

This is gonna be some slobber knocker football.
Both teams are gonna represent to the fullest.
This series will actually make both teams better every year.
    IT'S TAILGATING SEASON!

  • IMHO, I think that all the games will be closer than many people think.  Defense will win these games. may the best Defense show themselves.

  • Our team in 06 will also be very good and I'll place the odds in your favor slightly just because it'll be in morgantown with BE refs.  But if we get the first one you guys are in serious trouble. You all wont win in Huntington.  Third game I'll say is a tossup.  But honestly, I'm glad we can finally put all these stupid questions to rest and actually play the game on the field.

Question for you...why are you guys disappointed in the contract?  It seem to me to be tilted heavily in wvu's favor.  What gives?

  • Not everyone is upset.  I'm glad the games are being played simply because of all the bs jiving back and forth.  Depending on the outcome, I'm either going to be very happy or very medicated.  So either way I'll be fine.

As to why some hate it, well, as with every thing there is no one reason.  Some just hate marshall, some didn't like the game being forced, some believe this rewards the way MU officials have conducted themselves in the past.  I believe WVU officials are sincere in their reasons particularly regarding upgrading the schedule.  WVU and the Big East need to seriously upgrade in terms of SOS and sorry, but MU just doesn't fit that bill.  And now, one more opportunity has been removed for the next seven years.  So that's my take on it.

One last thing, I don't think you all fully appreciated the poisonous atmosphere created by Angel and more specifically Pruett.  I know WVU hasn't been blameless in this, but Pruett really did damage with his petty remarks.  I personally believe this game would have happened sooner if they hadn't conducted themselves the way they did.

  • You put a new system-in, in the Spring.  That's why Pruett's retirement hurts more than you think.  Snyder cannot do that until next year.  Not to mention his recruitment needs may change as well.

Therefore, if Snyder implements a new system it will be for the 06 season.  I don't care how much talent you have, if players are learning a new system they will not be well-oiled and that will cause MU serious problems.

So if that happens the 06 game will not be that close.  Unless WVU screws up.

  • Hello Z, good to hear from you. Not so fast my friend. Now, where have I heard that before. Upgrading of Out of Conference schedule. That is exactly what VT said about MU. In the latest addition of VT insider they stated that Marshall was the best quality opponent they could schedule that would do a 2-1. Here is a site, perhaps, you may find helpful in finding out how serious WVU is about upgrading their schedule.
    http://nationalchamps.net/NCAA/future schedules/future schedules home. htm
You will find if you check it out they have scheduled with the likes of Villanova, Buffalo, etc., and Penn State would not schedule them, or Pitt, but did schedule Syracuse. No VT etc. Actually when you put USF, L'ville without Petrino, Cincy, Conn, MU becomes one of their tougher opponents. At least ECU surely says so. At their site they say Marshall is much tougher than the likes of USF, or Cincy etc. As far as '06 is concerned I think you make a valid point, but who is to say, look what coaches like Mike Price did in their first year, but you may be right there,
because I think Rich Rodriguez is a very good coach, and in 2001 WVU went 3-8, so we will just have to wait until the game to have any idea.

    Warmest Regards,

    Carolina,

    Meanwhile Be Happy Mountaineer Friend!

ps. WVU OOC '06 Maryland, Buffalo, @ECU, @ Miss State
WVU OOC '07 Ball State, @ Maryland, ECU, Miss State
WVU OOC '08 Maryland, Villanova, ECU
         WVU OOC '09 @Maryland Villanova, @ECU

Z, Buffalo is the worst team in the MAC. Miss. State is the worst team in the SEC. Ball State is about to go on NCAA probation, and one of the worst teams in the MAC. Villanova is a 1-AA team that is mediorce at best. Where is the beef?

  • Z, we'll continue to play Tech, Tennesee, KSU, Wisconsin, Miami, FL etc, while you schedule Buffalo, Miss State, and Villanova (which is a very good D-IAA, but not as good as W&M, for what its worth).  How is your SOS better than ours in the coming years?  L'Ville is all you have.....oh and yes Marshall!

  • The herd lecturing about SOS is like VPI lecturing about integrity.

Did I miss an announcement about the herd playing Wisc.?

Note the series you mentioned are at best 2:1, some are 4:1.

  • Has VPI been called before the ethics committee?

Yes, evidently you missed the announcement.

What is your point about the 2-1, or 3-1, or 4-1 etc.

No real point about the games other than they are not 1:1.

  • Z, MU I believe is scheduled to play Wisconsin 2008, at their place, and a return in the future depending upon our expansion. I did not look up the schedule , but I am accurate, except I may be off one year.

We'll that 1-1 deal is the same type of problems most UNIVERSITIES are having. When you back out the conference schedules, and look at what remains, unless you are a super power, or pay a great deal of money you either work a deal, or play a MAC, or 1-AA opponent.
