  • I just heard that WV public broadcasting is going to pay MSN $70,000 to broadcast WOMENS soccer games. Im sorry but in these tough economic times that is a huge waste of money even if it was Marshall womens soccer.

  • Right Mark. You being a former Soccer dad and me as well. I enjoy the games. I do wish they would broadcast MU though.

When Marshall hits the top 10 or so like both WVU teams, perhaps that will happen.

  • Nothing quite like the government paying for television that NO ONE wants to watch.

Just makes me want to send them even more of my earnings . . .

  • There was a time back in the day, when public tv was used as a venue for MU football, but no one called this a waste of taxpayer monies.

Public broadcasting in general is a waste of taxpayer money.  It is not needed, and only serves provide more state jobs and benefits at taxpayer expense.

The fact that this wasteful, unneeded organization is paying $75K to broadcast women's soccer is just icing on the cake.

  • More like Bush giving all the bankers a blank check; not to mention the pharmacutical companies, with absolutely no competition; not to mention all of the local Huntington area guys who worked their rear ends off at International Nickel/Huntington Alloys/Special Metals, and in good faith bargained for their benefis and a fair wage, but only to retire and find Special Metals filing a bankruptcy chapter and cutting your already confirmed meager benefits by nearly 2/3. Folks this is just plain unfair, and the poor old boy in Huntington who never had much, never expected much, and is going to get a whole lot less than he even thought a little bit was, but back on topic; When WMUL decided to broadcast MU football. It was an entire unknown commidity thoughout WV and the tri-state area. They gave the poorest of the poor a hand, and MU took hold of this hand, and pulled herself out of the ditch she was born into with the help of many people including a one Dan Shoemaker. If you want to call this a waste of tax payer money; so be it.

I agree 100%.  The government should not be in the broadcasting business.  If there is a real demand for it then some station will broadcast it.  If not then those that like it that much can go watch.

  • Well to put this into another perspective. Let's say we love outdoor sports. Hunting/fishing and the like. If it had not been for the taxpayers bailing out these naturally god given sports 30 years ago, we wouldnot be wading out into knapps creek today to trout fish.

That was government intervention because of environmental conditions.  That is not a fair comparison, IMO.  With that said, isn't it correct most of the work done on our creeks and in our parks has been done with the help of Trout Unlimited and through money raised by the sell of hunting and fishing licenses?   I know for a fact TU has been involved in several recovery projects.

You're right.  No competition whatsoever in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • that is a whole lot like the gasoline stations in my area. maybe 1,000, all receiving their petrol from 3 companies, and all having the same price, yet if I drive from 9 to 39 miles in any direction I find the same gasoline for maybe .50 cents per gallon less.

G.W. Bush would not allow our own medicare program in America to competitively shop their prescription medications out of America vs companies manufacturing the same medications for 1/4 or less the same prices outside of the USA, yet the people who live in Russia (oh that's a scary word), or Canada (a little more friendly) as an example are living with the same medications at 1/4 the cost of the poor people in WV or the USA. It is corporate socialism (protectionsism). Now let's make up some (bleep) scary thing about this medication so everyone in America will believe we golddigger USA drug dealers have their welfare in our best interests, and if they do not get the USA government approval it might not be as good as what the USA drug dealers have said is ok to deal us. It is all (bleep), and they all should be put in prison for life.

  • So, you advocate the re-importation of price-controlled drugs into the US?  Do you even have a clue of the possible ramifications of such a policy?

Since the US is the main profit center for prescription drugs, it's no coincidence that most of the world's pharmaceutical innovation occurs here.  So let's imagine this utopia you have described where drugs are as cheap in the US as the rest of the socialist world.  Drug manufacturers will begin to shift their profits from the drugs that are being re-imported to the drugs that are not re-imported.  If that practice is stopped, and their profit margins decline, then you'll have the worst-case scenario for humankind.

Manufacturing life-saving drugs is an extremely expensive endeavor.  The cost of bringing a drug to market is approaching one BILLION dollars.  That's for ONE drug.  And most don't make it, rendering the money spent on research and develpment a sunk cost.  It is imperative that these companies are free to make huge profits on their existing drugs, or R&D will suffer.  And do you know who suffers when R&D is slowed down?  Sick people.

Just say no to socialism, and do yourself a favor in the future and comment on things which you understand.

  • Hey man I am commenting on something I know about. I know for certain this Republican lead government under the direction of George W. Bush has all but wrecked this great country, and I do know for a fact that George W. Bush would not allow our medicare prescription drugs to be shopped for competitve price throughout the free trade zone, which is by the way anti-american. The USA is not necessarily the leader is medical innovation. France, Germany, and many other countries are far ahead of America in medicine. Now I Know this is totally abrasive to everything you have ever heard, but it just happens to be the truth, and as far as furture medical treatments which will include stem cell research, we are so far behind the 8 ball it is not even funny, but let you/your wife/your child/your loved one have a problem and you will be one of the first to ask why can't I have that treatment; I live in the USA. We are great, and we have always paid a hell of a lot more for our drugs and treatments than anyone else in the world, so I should have this treatment. You may hear, depart from me, I never knew you!
