Anyone who paid state income tax in West Virginia in fiscal 2007 probably helped pay for West Virginia University's athletics program. Only a handful of universities have truly self-sufficient athletics programs. West Virginia's program is not one of them. Public money must be used to subsidize the department, either through student fees, bond issues or transfers from the university's general fund. So chances are, any West Virginian who dutifully filed a return in April 2008 had some of his or her tax dollars diverted to the Mountaineers athletics program.

Most of us can't stand QU'eer fans, but even those who tolerate them couldn't have believed that they were self-sufficient.  That's laughable.  What's worse, the simple math of the ESPN deal with the Big EasY would indicate that they receive $3.8M a year from the TV deal.  Let alone BCS share, NCAA tournament share and gate --- how in the hell do you waste that much money and COST the taxpayers?????

Herdnation had the same article...however, mentioned a boosteractually donated $1 million to them after the game...to cover the cost off lost tickets.

Public funds, I believe, are defined as tuition and fees as well as state appropriations. If WVU uses general funds where these two sources of money are deposited to fund athletic programs then they are not self-sufficient.  This guy made a general statement with a definition but he didn't back it up with a source such as reviewed financial data from WVU and found general funds transferred to athletic dept.  I do not know if WVU is self-sufficient or not. I would prefer someone to do a freedom of information request and really look at their financial data to see.

Wait, now that's not entirely true...................

A good deal of their money was donated by politicians and former politications that embellzzed and passed laws to allow themselves to get wealthier at the expense of the working class of WV.

I forgot to mention the massive amounts of money that was given to the school by one of the nations leading manufactor of painkillers.  Thousands of people become addicted yearly, everyday people overdose and die from that stuff. 

But hey, no wonder they don't worry about the money lost from playing the coal bowl, they've got "tax dollars and pills"  to pay their bills! 8)
