The football coaching staffs and administrations at Marshall University and Western Carolina University followed somewhat similar and interesting paths to get where they are.

Marshall head coach Doc Holliday was a longtime assistant at West Virginia University with stints at N.C. State and the University of Florida as well. But anytime Holliday's name is brought up in reference to his time before Marshall, it is associated with the Mountaineers and the job he did there as a player and coach.

There was a bit of anxiety when Holliday was named for the Marshall job by athletic director Mike Hamrick because of his strong affiliation with "the school up North" as he has often put it.

Holliday was Hamrick's first coaching hire after taking over as athletic director in 2009.
