HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall forward Robert Goff got a chance to do something this offseason that he hadn't since he began playing basketball as a junior at Broad Ripple High in Indianapolis, Ind.

He got to sit back and observe.

Granted, the circumstances surrounding that opportunity were anything but fun. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound senior was recovering from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. So while the rest of his teammates got the full benefits of the brand-spanking-new NCAA rule that allows for eight hours a week of staff-supervised workouts, Goff had to hang back, sometimes in a knee brace, sometimes not.

Yet while he had to watch, he got the luxury of watching with Marshall Coach Tom Herrion, an opportunity Goff feels will help immensely this season.

  • Goff is REALLY fired up according to several who know him well.  I'm looking forward to this year for him!  I think he's gonna do BIG things.

  • He is definitely a key player for the Herd.  If he can consistently hit the 8 to 10 foot jump shot he was hitting early last season, that give the Herd another offensive weapon.  But if Goff can simply stay out of foul trouble and shoot better at the free throw line, then that will be a big plus.

That would be good, as he came in as the 18th best JUCO player in the country, and was a major disappointment

I understand your opinion, but on last year's team his role wasn't one that was going to get a lot of attention.  His free throw shooting was a disappointment and his getting into foul trouble (many of the fouls are not the kind you get upset about --- a lot of hustle fouls) was tough...but I don't classify his last year a disappointment.  With Kane, Canty, Pittman and Tinnon, I'm guessing he's going to have to have a big year somewhere other than the PPG column.

Somebody on this Board even went so far as to label Goff a "bust" last season as I recall.

I hope you are right, but I always expect guys coming off injury to take a while to back in to the swing of things.

The injuries were vastly different, but look how long it has taken Spikes.  I look for Spikes to be fully healthy this year and to be a big contributor.
