HUNTINGTON - Marshall guard DeAndre Kane, the Thundering Herd's top scorer and the third-best assist man in Division I college basketball, is out indefinitely with a right hand injury.

Marshall released a one-sentence statement Monday announcing the injury. The Herd does not play again until Saturday, when it faces undefeated No. 11 Cincinnati (9-0) at 2 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center.

Kane's absence throws Marshall's point guard position even further into flux. Freshman Kareem Canty, a top-25 point guard recruit from Harlem, N.Y., figured to make a major push for the starting job. However, the NCAA deemed him academically ineligible on Nov. 15. Marshall Coach Tom Herrion handed Kane point guard responsibilities, and he responded with gaudy assist totals.

With Kane gone, those duties could be spread around freshmen DeVince Boykins and Tamron Manning and sophomore Chris Martin. Herrion gave Martin his first career start over Kane on Saturday in the Herd's 69-63 comeback win over Coppin State, saying it was a coach's decision. Martin played just seven minutes, missing two shots and committing one turnover.
