  • What happens if the BE BB7 get the name BE?  Could that diminish the value of the football conference brand and the value of it's TV contract?  What would the football conference call itself? New CUSA? Old BE? :o

  • That is an excellent question, and IMO if they did the value the conference for new members would be greatly diminished.

I think the jumping schools all realign after this season as there is NO BCS payout to the BEC ater 2013.

  • UC and Uconn are probably planning on getting big bucks from a trip to the final "as we know it" BCS this year; but they might be radically surprised by UCF and/or Houston.

  • I don't think the basketball schools can vote to leave the Big East and take the name with them.
Remember, they are leaving the BE, the BE name is still intact in the original place. Legal issues will prevent the basketball schools from leaving with the name and all the goods.

  • In another thread someone said that if you have six or more members they can take the name.

Their legal statement - We are staying BE and everyone else (do what you want) ... They have the majority vote as SF, UConn, Cinn will have no say and no new member has a vote................................................

  • Big East basketball cannot and will not take the name.

They voted to leave conf. and cannot take it with them. Just because they have 7 votes does not allow them to take the name

  • Because the Catholic 7 made the decision to exit rather than to dissolve the conference, they also have to live with the fact that they do not have ultimate control over the Big East name. When the news of their departure first broke, Aresco (BE commish) indicated that the break-up was going to be amiable, and there was indication that the football schools would be willing to sell the name to the basketball schools. But it remains a question mark how that's actually going to play out.

The value of the football contract evidently will be determined this week, with ESPN having a chance to match NBC's offer... so to the point of the original question... it might be that the name won't even be set-in-stone until after this contract has already been signed.

  • I was under the impression that since they are charter members and represent a majority that they could indeed take the name. This will go to court for sure, if it hasn't aleady. I hope it becomes a royal mess!!!!!

  • Thunder you are wrong & bighat is somewhat correct. They just need a majority of current BE members. The BE 7 would have a majority. They then could dissolve the league & keep the name.

  • kjh, they've already decided not to dissolve the league. I don't know if they're past the point of no return on that decision, but it sure seems that way based on the reports one can read from eastern media.

  • It seems to me that the name BIG EAST is half the value for the new "football" schools TV contract.  Although I don't remember hearing if the battle over the name was settled, you would think the new TV contract negotiations wouldn't be finalized until the name issue was settled. IMO

This will be a defining moment week for the Big  East as its long talked about and complicated new television deal for football and basketball is settled.

Right now, the Big East has a hard offer from NBC that will pay between 20 and 23 million a year. ESPN has the right to make a counter offer, but it is more complicated than simply a money issue. Promotion and time slots and all sorts of other items are on the agenda.

Unless, ESPN comes up with a major boost in the money figures, the feeling is that the Big  East and NBC will make their deal and the Big East will also close a deal which could include, CBS, TBS and Fox as well, which will bring in additional revenue.

And don’t be stunned if the Big East and ESPN still have an arrangement for broadcasts of some of their games in football and basketball, primarily non-conference in nature.

Once that is done, Big East commissioner Mike Aresco will then continue with the process of the break up with the Catholic 7 group of basketball schools who are set to go their own way, starting in the fall of 2014 (unofficially right now)...................

  • I think bball was the BE. Every since VT and others departed it was VERY lucky to be BCS. Now I don't see it being more valuable than CUSA. The name is immaterial to TV audiences.

  • Is it official that the "football" schools will retain the name Big East?  I just believe the brand BE is very valuable.

  • In the media room last night, Pastner said that "as of now, Memphis will be in the Big East next year". He also said he would play any where the president and AD sent him.  I was particularly taken by his choice of words "as of now"

  • He did seem to go out of his way to make it very clear that he didn't want to leave C-USA.
There are many ways to interpret that though.  He claimed he had a lot of confidence in C-USA.  I could take that as he had a lot of confidence Memphis would remain king in the Memphis and 11 dwarfs conference, and his seat would be more comfortable there than playing against a more competitive field.  I realize we have some good new bball schools coming in, but I think Pastner is finally beginning, (he's not there yet) to get it as far as coaching and leading the team goes, and if hey ever did see a dropoff in recruiting, I think that is back to where it needs to be as well.
