  • George was a beast! The old ABA with it's red, white, and blue basketball stands out as a classic!

  • I was visiting Los Angles during that time and got to see him play. During warm-ups, my friend and I yelled "GO HERD" and he acknowledged us with a surprised look. :o

  • Florida Herd Fan and myself were at the Ale House Super Bowl Party a few years ago. We see this lady wearing a Marshall Jacket but we had never seen her before at our TV parties. She was on her cell so we waited for her to finish then approached her. She was George Stone's widow. We had a nice talk about Stone, Redd, Davidson, Dan D'Antoni and Bob Allen. That was a great team ! She then told us her phone conversation earlier was with Reggie Oliver. FHF and myself were not aware George had passed on either. That made the initial greeting awkward but she was very nice and relived some great times at MU we all 3 shared.

  • Clearly the second best Herd pro, behind only Hal Greer...they're the only two players who scored more than 1,000 points in the NBA/ABA...and he was finished only a year after this video was made...

  • Thanks for the memories guys. I was WMUL play by play person during Stone's career.  MU under Ellis Johnson played a double low post offense with Stone breaking up to just above the foul line.  He was a deadly shot from there.  I nicknamed him George "The Radar Man" Stone.  Once he locked on the basket like radar he was money in the bank.  He belongs in the same category as Bunny Gibson and Keith Venney.  Stone had some great scoring battles against Bowling Greens Walt Piatkowski and Toledo's Steve Mix.  George lit up Nebraska one night in the NIT for something like 47 points.  As Archie Bunker said, "Those were the Days".

Yep, 1965... Ellis Johnson head coach I believe. George was quick witted. A true performer and a great Son of Marshall. At the old field house.

  • Imo, Stone was the best, most consistent pure shooter who ever played the game at MU. When Ellis Johnson called the double low post pick and screen, it worked almost all the time. Stone would come open at the foul ine and it was a given that George would score. He was deadly from just about anywhere on the court if open, and most of his shots would now be considered long 3's even in the NBA.

Bunny was extremely good during his senior year and had some great games, but GS was more consistent for an entire career against better competition. In those days MU played some of the best BB teams in the country in their Memorial Invitational.

THE IRON MAN 5,, as they were affectionately known, were so much fun to watch, and went undefeated as juior varsity players (if memory  serves me correctly). They were the precursors to the Dantoni, Lee teams that were ranked as high as #8. Yes, THOSE WERE THE DAYS when MU BB was king.
What day is it? Game day! What day? Game day! Play till the whistle blows!!!!

Also thanks for the memories!! I made the train trip to NYC for one of the NIT matchups. The Old Madison Square Garden was amazing for a 20 year old naive kid like me.

My neighbor played for Villinova during that time. When I mentioned Marshall, all he could remember was George Stone. He tried to guard Stone, and fouled himself out with 5 points. George had a good night.

My neighbor went on to career with FBI. Unfortunately, he's battling prostate cancer right now.

  • I made it to the new Garden with WMUL.  I believe that was the next year when they lost to St.Peters in overtime.
