  • In an article in Yahoo about the Pats problems with their TE Hernandez Aaron Dobson is slated for a "value boost". Also "Dobson arguably the most sure-handed prospect in April's draft could be featured more than originally expected. Targeted nearly 100 times at MU last year, he didn't drop a single pass. If the freshly inked receiver absorbs the offense quickly and earns Belichick's trust, he's a legitimate 1000-yard5-7 TD snoozer". Looks like Aaron is big time. Great to read.

I've read this multiple times and it's not true. Had one go through his hands at Purdue which was picked and brought back for 6, dropped a fade in the end zone late against Ohio and dropped a for sure TD in the back of the end zone in the 4th against Tulsa. And I believe I remember one more that went through his hands that was picked during a home game.

  • 4 year deal for 3.4 million?  Is that really second round draft pick money?  Seems like just above the league min

  • $3.4 million over 4 years is double the league minimum, at least (not sure of exact minimum for this year).  Also, he got multiple years.  I didn't read specifics, but he likely has some guaranteed money as well.  This is a very good first contract.  Low level players don't get deals close to this.  In fact, some solid veterans don't even get deals this good.  Most NFL players make less money than you think.  There are only 10 or so guys making huge money on each team.

Girthy this was not my quote. It was from a yahoo source as I pointed out. Understand the quotation marks before you question the facts. If indeed your memory is correct 4 to 5 drops is still remarkable and your forgetting the greatest "catch" against ECU in the Joan. I'm happy for Aaron, and hope he represents the Herd well. You seem intent upon tarnishing his career.

Right, it's good money. The most recent CBA reeled in rookie contracts because you had guys like Jamarcus Russell getting $58m guaranteed before ever taking a snap. He's likely getting the minimum salary over the next four years ($2.3m in salary), most rookie contracts are structured that way, he's just getting an $800k signing bonus and $300k worth of guaranteed money (workout bonuses, etc) on top of that minimum salary. RG3 got paid the NFL minimum salary last year as well, he just got a $13.8m lump sum when signing his contract.

  • Nothing towards you kjh, I was just saying that I've read that statement multiple times and it is wrong. I know it wasn't you that said it. I also wish Dobson nothing but the best but a newspaper shouldn't print something that obviously isn't true.

I guess, I expected him to be paid more based on him being a WR and going in the second round.  I'm not sure the 4th year helps or not. If he proves to be a 1 or 2 WR, couldn't that cost him the opportunity to make 5-10 million in his 4th year....

800k per year minus fed/state taxes - agent fees - NFL lifestyle expenses - off season personal trainers - dieticians

Probably doesn't leave a ton of money...

  • I was looking at our players salaries that made it in the NFL and probably 80% of them are under a million per year.

I heard that Joda Burgess is making over a million a year selling oxygen and home health supplies.

  • Yeah, I don't think girthy was trying to say something bad about Dobson or say that quote wasn't from a legit source.  I've read that before too and wondered about it.

For the record, I think Dobson does have great hands and I'm happy for the success he's having.

But I specifically remember him dropping a wide open pass once in a home game this past year.  He was squared up facing Cato and it went right through his hands and I remember a few people griping at the time about how he wasn't living up to all the hype from his junior year.

That was just one pass and I think he's a great player.  Just saying, that quote about no drops confused me too.

If he's that good he can renegotiate after year 3 and get a new deal. That said, he's not going to be making $5-$10m a year. Calvin Johnson is the best receiver in the league and he's making, salary wise, $700k this year, $5m next year, $12m the year after that, before his salary sky rockets where the team will renegotiate or cut him.

NFL salaries aren't what you think, couple that with the fact that guys only get checks during the season too, and you have to have sense and a good financial guy to make sure you're not broke in a year or two. I know the whole NFL lifestyle has left a lot of guys bankrupt, most of which were borderline guys, making the league minimum, trying to live like they were making $2m a year, and not $500k.
