  • Apparently there is a new rule this year , that if you spike the ball with 2 seconds or 1 second remaining before the half, and I believe the game, that the clock expires and the game or half ends.  What is the point in that?? What do you guys think about this rule.  Seems like a complete waste to me, that won't do anything accept prevent some exciting games from being as exciting.  Anybody know the reasoning behind the rule?? Apparently the refs in the NIU game, missed the call before half time, and allowed NIU's spoke to count with 2 seconds remaining.

  • That seems kind of stupid to me. If they spike it with however many seconds the game should still have 1 play depending on the timing. Seems kind of pointless to me.

  • Its kind of like basketball where you have to a certain amount of time to do a catch and shoot situation. It leaves so it is not up to a clock operator to get the timing right. I remember a Michigan fb game where the hometown clock operator basically allowed Michigan a chance to win it due to his so called slow reflexes...

  • I don't by that either, basketball the ball has to leave ur hands before the clock hits zero, football as long as you get the ball snapped, even with .01, u can take all the time in the world.
I hate the new rule.  You will 2 when it goes against us.

I agree but it is all up to the clock operator to start the clock. Would you want some hometown clock operator deciding the outcome of a game?

Set a standard and make everybody deal with it...like they did

  • I just don't see that mattering in football like it does basketball.  Now u will have hometown clock operators trying to stop the clock at 3 seconds instead of 2, just like in the past the would try to stop it at 1 SEC instead of 0.  Regardless of all of that, officials change the amt of time on the clock based on reviews of video all the time, so that kind of takes hometown clock operator out of equation.  Does nothing but take one exciting possibly game winning or tying play out.
