  • This is way off the topic of Marshall and probably a waste of everyone’s time, but I’ve got to ask anyway.

Is anyone on the board currently in the Pendleton/Grant county area? If so where is the forest fire in relation to the Judy Gap, Circleville, Cherry Grove area?

I bought a second home on Snowy Mountain Road and just can’t help wondering where the fire is in relation to my place. Right now my guess is it’s about 20 miles away, but being the worse fire in the area in 60-70 years, I just can’t help wondering where things stand.

A wildfire is burning in the Monongahela National Forest, and dozens of crews are trying to put it out.

The fire is currently burning in the Smoke Hole area of the Cheat-Potomac Ranger District, about 11 miles southwest of Petersburg in Pendleton County.

The U.S. Forest Service reports that the fire has grown to about 1,400 acres. They also say crews have about 20 percent of the blaze contained.

The fire was first reported on Sunday. The cause is under investigation

  • Information from today's Charleston Gazette.  You probably already know by now where the fire is in relation to your property but I haven't stopped thinking about it since I first saw your post.

The Smoke Hole fire is being cooperatively managed by a unified command structure involving the West Virginia Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service. Two 20-person fire crews, five fire engines and a helicopter are involved in fighting the fire on public lands while firefighters from the Franklin, Upper Tract, Seneca Rocks and Petersburg volunteer fire departments are fighting the fire on private lands. Additional personnel and equipment have been requested.

Forest Road 79 remains closed to the public because of safety concerns, as does the North Fork Mountain Trail from its intersection with the Landis Trail south to a trailhead off U.S. 33.
