Okay--I'm a lurker, not a poster.  But I'm a spreadsheet and research kinda girl.  Their press release is false.  It is wrong.  I went to each and every rating website that CUSA listed (Massey, Anderson & Heater, Colley, Billingsley, Sagarin, and Wolfe) and their rating numbers are wrong five times (3 for Rice and 2 for Marshall)!!!  Only one of the five mistakes is in Marshall's favor.

Can someone get this to Hamrick, Holiday, whoever???  I've got it in a spreadsheet and am working on saving the PDF's with dates and timestamps...

    Here are the facts:

  • I'd like a detailed explanation and whoever figured this out to show us exactly what they did to decide that Rice hosts.

Regarding Sagarin... have to look at the ELOs, which exclude margin of victory as part of the calculation and which is actually used for the BCS...

You're actually right though that there is a discrepancy, but it seems nominal... Rice is 56, though listed on CUSA as 54... MU is 58, though listed on CUSA at 56... difference of 2 either way... but I agree that it's odd that they'd have their numbers off even a little bit in a press release.

I'll put this simply... You are looking at the wrong versions of those rankings.  For various reasons, each computer poll has a normal version and a BCS version.  Massey (as an example) was asked by the BCS to remove margin of victory from his equation, therefore he creates 2 versions - BCS and normal.

CUSA used the BCS versions of these rankings for their calculations.  They are correct.

  • Okay, regarding Sagarin.  But tell me how they got that Rice was 59th in Massey.  See pic below.  (I'm new to posting, so sorry for mistakes!!!)

Okay, I can't figure out how to post a pic (I will work on that--LOL!), but here's the link:  http://www.masseyratings.com/rate.php?s=cf2013
