BECKLEY — It’s a good time to be a Marshall athletics fan — especially in this part of the state.

Not only is the football team going into its most anticipated season in over a decade, but the men’s basketball team recently brought home a Son of Marshall who also happens to be a southern West Virginia native.

All that and more will be celebrated when the Beckley Athletic Club of Marshall University (BAC-MU) holds its 24th annual Big Green Coaches Tour golf tournament Monday, June 9, at Grandview Country Club.

Registration and lunch, provided by Subway, will run 10:30-11:45 a.m. The four-man golf scramble will have a noon shotgun start.

Among the coaches scheduled to attend is Danny D’Antoni, a Mullens native who was named the Thundering Herd’s new basketball coach last month. He returns to Huntington, where he was a point guard in the early 1970s, after a 30-year career as coach at Socastee High in Myrtle Beach that preceded four stops in a nine-year career as an NBA assistant to his brother Mike D’Antoni.

“That has created some excitement for the local community, especially for people in Wyoming County and Raleigh County,” said Larry Foster with BAC-MU. “I think he will do a good job.”

Joining D’Antoni will be athletic director Mike Hamrick and football coach Doc Holliday, whose team is expected to have a huge season, led by senior quarterback and darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate Rakeem Cato.

The Herd went 10-4 last year, capping the season with a 31-20 win over Maryland in the Military Bowl. It was the team’s first 10-win season since Byron Leftwich’s senior season in 2002.

“Sports at Marshall are looking pretty good right now,” Foster said.

Other Marshall coaches will be announced in the coming days.

Dinner will be provided by Pasquale’s after the event.

There will be several door prizes and hole prizes.

Cost for the event is $125 per golfer. Anyone not wanting to golf but wishing to attend dinner can do so for $25.

All proceeds go toward scholarships for Marshall student-athletes.

For more information, call Foster at 304-573-5336, Doug Leeber at 304-266-8766 or Tonya Patton 304-731-2089.
