FCS schools will play role in determining FBS champion

When Youngstown State (1991, 1993, 1994, 1997) and Marshall (1992, 1996) were taking turns at winning Division I-AA titles in the 1990s, Jim Tressel was coaching the Penguins and the Thundering Herd had NFL players on the roster like Randy Moss, Troy Brown, Chad Pennington and others.

The great FCS schools either have great coaching, players who transferred from FBS schools -- or both. So they are more dangerous to play than Idaho or Georgia State because they have better talent, particularly at the skilled positions, than those weaker FCS schools. Don't have the depth due to scholarship numbers, but talent is even or better at the top FCS schools compared to the bottom FBS programs.

College Football Playoff selection committee chairman Bill Hancock said Tuesday they "haven't talked specifically about FCS." They better start doing their homework on FCS schools because not every FBS team from a power league is going to take the stance Muschamp has.

  • So, the writer suggests that a "power" FCS team maybe should receive greater regard by the committee than a Sun Belt or a MAC team?... is that what he said?... maybe HerdInChicago, in particular, could set me straight on that.

  • What he is saying is that the Committee is supposed to be focusing largely on Strength of Schedule and the discussion re FCS is not to include them in the mix but in regards to a team playing one or two FCS programs and do those wins count as much as a win vs. a CUSA or MAC team.  He seems to think they can or do or should.

FCS has their playoff system.  The CFP system guarantees a slot for at least one out of the Group of 5.

  • So a writer thinks that and the committee apparently doesn't care enough about it to have even thought about it.  Yep, sounds like it is really important.

I agree with the premise that beating the best teams from FCS is more impressive than beating UMass, but at the end of the day the people picking the teams are going to be less impressed with any FCS win regardless of the quality of the team. It's hard to know how good any FCS team really is because they only have to play one FBS team a year. It's like Boise, or wvu for that matter, winning BCS games.  When you only have to get up for one game and the opponent takes you for granted anything can happen.

Thats a bogus excuse for those who overlook and are just outplayed by smaller schools. An FCS team will beat an FBS very rarely. Not going to look it up but id say between 5-10% of the time. Thats pretty low for a team that only has to get up for one game and anythimg can happen. It takes more than that. Just my .02. Boise could play with anyone and they proved it as best they could over the past decade.

  • whoever said that hasn't looked into how these "experts" will be deciding...SOS is a major factor....no FCS team will ever have a shot based on that alone
