As the new Marshall University football turf gets its finishing touches, the old turf has been cashing in and benefiting the Habitat for Humanity.

"The Marshall turf was being thrown away," J.B. Miller, manager of Habitat for Humanity Restore said.  "We made a phone call and asked how much do you want."

A modest request was their first approach.

"We were thinking three rolls would be great. We did three rolls in one day," Miller said.

The demand so high they had to purchase more of the field turf. At just $2 a square yard, Miller has seen people come in to buy the old Marshall turf for all different reasons.

"A porch mat for their front porch," Miller said. "They are taking small pieces and framing them. We even had a daycare center buy enough to put under their entire playground."

With each piece of old turf bought helps contribute to new homes being built by Habitat for Humanity.

"The average cost of a house is $40,000 and we might be close to halfway to a habitat house. If you think of it, rather go to a landfill, it's a half a habitat house that landed right on our doorstep," said Miller.
