HUNTINGTON -- Tyrone Collins, a member of Marshall University's 1971-72 NCAA tournament men's basketball team, was posthumously voted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame.

Collins is part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2014 that includes football player Darius Watts, wrestler David Coyle, softball player Sierra Davenport, baseball player Albie DeYoung, women's soccer player Lindsay Jayjack and baseball/football player Milan Zban.

"This class represents some of the finest student-athletes in school history," Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick said in a news release. "The contributions of these fine men and women are truly appreciated by everyone in the Marshall Athletics family."

The annual Hall of Fame dinner is Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Don Morris Room of Memorial Student Center. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the Cam Henderson Center ticket office, on HerdZone.com or by phone at 304-696-4373 or 800-THE-HERD.

Hall of Fame members will be guests of the Marshall M Club at its Saturday, Sept. 13, tailgate before the Ohio-Marshall football game in Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

    Class of 2014

    Tyrone "Ty" Collins, Basketball (1970-73)

Collins, from Paterson, N.J., was a 6-foot-3 guard for the 1971-72 NCAA team that reached No. 8 in the nation and the 1972-73 team that played in the National Invitation Tournament. His 58.7 career field goal shooting percentage is the school record. He also set a school record by shooing 73 percent for the 1972-73 season when he averaged 15.1 points. Collins graduated from Marshall in 1974 and returned to his hometown to teach and coac. He died in a swimming accident in September 1996.

    David Coyle, Wrestling (1977-79)

Coyle, of Sayreville, N.J., was of two Coyle twin brothers (with Dan) to wrestle at Marshall. David was the 1979 Southern Conference champion and advanced to the NCAA tournament at 167 pounds as senior. Coyle was the Southern Conference runner-up in 1978. He won more than 80 percent of his matches.

    Sierra Davenport, Softball (2001-04)

The Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in 2004, Davenport, of Tucson, Ariz., finished No. 1 all-time at Marshall with 131 career stolen bases. Her 40 steals in 2003 was a season record broken this year by Morgan Zerkle. She was All-MAC first team in 2001 and 2004 and made second team in 2003.

    Albert "Albie" DeYoung (Baseball, 1975-78)

The Paterson, N.J., pitcher had only one good (right) eye as the result of a childhood accident. DeYoung led Marshall to the Southern Conference championship and NCAA tournament in 1978. That team fell one win shy of making the College World Series. DeYoung's 19 career victories (19-11 record) is still tied for first in Marshall records.

    Lindsay Jayjack, Soccer (1999-2002)

Jayjack, of Dublin, Ohio, finished her career second in goals for the Thundering Herd with 18. She was an All Mid-American Conference second team selection in 2002 and received the Cam Henderson Scholar-Athlete of the Year award at Marshall in 2000. She received the MAC Commissioner's Academic Award in 2000 and 2001.

    Darius Watts, Football (2000-03)

Watts, from of College Park, Ga., is second all-time at Marshall in receptions (272), touchdowns receptions (47) and receiving yards (4,031) and helped the Herd to two Mid-American Conference titles. Watts was the Denver Broncos second round draft pick in 2004. He was with the New York Giants in 2006 and 2007 and player later in the Arena League for the Philadelphia Soul.

    .

Milan Zban, Baseball and Football (1951-54)

Zban was a four-year letterman for the Thundering Herd baseball team and a three-year letterman in football. Zban played offensive and defensive tackle at 6-foot-3, 225-pounds and started for two seasons. As a baseball player, Zban received All Mid-American Conference honors in 1954 with a .347 average and six home runs. The former newspaper sports writer was inducted into the Summit County (Ohio) Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

  • Pretty sure Milan is his uncle.

Speaking of the Hall of Fame, the HD online story had a picture of Marco and it got me thinking, is Allen Young in the Hall of Fame?  If not, he should be.  Best Marco we have ever had, won the national championship, and really brought some attention to Marshall while wearing the Marco suit.  He definitely had a Hall of Fame career.

  • Allen Young (as Marco) was presented
an M-Club blanket some years ago before
    the blanket presentations were discontinued.

Even though this presentation was met
with a little hesitation, Marco's ceremony
got the biggest crowd reception of all of
the blanket presentations.  The blanket was
presented at a men's basketball game and
Allen got a standing ovation in the CAM.
The Marco, at the time, got on his knees
and bowed down to Allen....the best Marco
    ever.
Retired 10 years early to follow Herd sports.
Those 10 years have been marvelous.

  • It is very sad to think that Ty Collins' life ended so early.  He was a great hoopster.  If you wanted to see what  fast break should look like watch some old footage of Mike Dantoni, Ty Collins and Billy James running it.  It was poetry in motion.
