HUNTINGTON, W.Va.– Rookies always have to earn their stripes. Newcomers at any level, whether it be college football or entering the work force must earn the respect of their peers while showing that they belong.

But at Marshall takes the old cliché literally.

“The red-stripe is for the rookies,” Herd linebacker D.J. Hunter said. “They (rookies) have to earn their stripe off the helmet.”

That’s right. Since Doc Holliday arrived in 2010, freshmen and other newcomers to Marshall must wear a bright red stripe down the middle of their helmet and must earn the kelly green stripe Herd fans are accustomed to. But getting the stripe off is not as simple as it may seem. There is a system in place that each player must go through for consideration of having the stripe removed.
